While there’s no such thing as Botox in a bottle, a skin-tightening cream can help target some common signs of aging. These creams are designed to do exactly what you think: firm and tighten the complexion while minimizing sagging, wrinkles, and fine lines.

Unfortunately, not all skin-tightening creams are alike in terms of efficacy, and it’s an expensive search for the highest-quality formulas — so our PEOPLE Tested team tried out 23 popular formulas to find the ones worth your money.

After over 1,200 hours of testing over the course of eight weeks, we narrowed down our selections to 11 products from Skinceuticals, Estée Lauder, Gold Bond, Summer Fridays, and more.

Keep reading to discover the best skin-tightening creams we tested and what ingredients to look for, according to dermatologists.

Best Overall: Estée Lauder Revitalizing Supreme+ Moisturizer Youth Power Creme

$70 at Nordstrom.com

$140 at Sephora.com

Pros

  • Skin feels more supple and hydrated immediately upon application

  • Reduced the appearance of dark circles

  • Thick cream easily absorbs into the skin

Cons

  • One of the more expensive creams we tested (but you get what you pay for)

After over 1,200 hours of testing, we were most impressed by this skin-tightening cream from Estée Lauder.

Upon application, our tester's complexion was a lot more hydrated and supple-looking, thus minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. She also saw a reduction in dark circles. With regular use, we found that it's not just effective at diminishing the look of fine lines and wrinkles, but it also delivers beneficial skin hydration that soothes, brightens, and adds a supple finish to the complexion.

The cream has a thicker consistency that glides on easily and melts into the skin with excellent absorption. Because of this, it’s one of the more versatile options that we tried, layering nicely over other skincare formulas and under makeup products as well.

Size: 1 oz., 1.7 oz., 2.5 oz. | Key Ingredients: Hibiscus sinensis, moringa extract, cactus stem cell extract, hyaluronic acid | Skin Type: All skin types

Our Experts Say

"Skin-tightening creams work by using ingredients that boost collagen production. These ingredients help to regenerate skin cells and provide hydrating nourishment, which results in increased elasticity and firmness of the skin.” — Dr. Dendy Engelman, board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs surgeon

Best Overall, Runner-Up: SkinCeuticals Tripeptide-R Neck Repair

$136 at Dermstore.com

$135 at Skinceuticals.com

Pros

  • Can be applied to the face as well as the neck area

  • Designed for daily use, despite retinol inclusion

  • Also helped reduce breakouts

Cons

  • One of the more expensive creams we tested

  • May not be suitable for sensitive skin types due to the retinol

While testing for the best skin-tightening creams, this Skinceuticals cream also highly impressed our testers. It's technically designed for the neck area, but you can use it on the face, too.

To get the best understanding of its power, we tested this retinol formula on our necks and were highly impressed by the results. The cream has a thicker consistency that is easy to apply and glides all over the skin without any tugging or rubbing.

It’s also highly absorbent, with virtually no downtime after application, so your skin really drinks it up. With regular use, we not only saw tighter skin on our neck area but also experienced less breakouts — likely due to retinol’s ability to unclog pores.

Size: 1.69 oz. | Key Ingredients: Retinol, glaucine complex, tripeptide concentrate | Skin Type: All skin types

The More You Know

While active ingredients in skin-tightening creams are important, it's not the only aspect worth considering. According to Dr. Michael I. Jacobs, a board-certified dermatologist and associate professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College, the hydration levels in skin-tightening creams also help achieve desired results. “Some of the appearance benefits of creams for tightening is due to hydration of the fine lines on the surface of the skin,” he explains.

Best Budget: Gold Bond Ultimate Neck & Chest Firming Cream

$10 at Amazon.com

$13 at Target.com

Pros

  • Lightweight, creamy consistency that absorbs well

  • Hypoallergenic

  • Formulated with salicylic acid to help reduce chest breakouts

  • Includes SPF 20

Cons

  • More subtle results than others we tested

For a less expensive option that targets the neck and chest area, consider the Gold Bond firming cream. This hypoallergenic drugstore pick is features salicylic acid to gently exfoliate the skin while keeping chest breakouts at bay.

While testing, we were impressed by its lightweight and creamy consistency, which absorbs easily into the skin and instantly replenishes moisture. We appreciated the hypoallergenic formula, so that those with sensitive skin can experience its benefits without being irritated.

Although this formula works well at nourishing the skin and can also provide a smoothing and tightening effect, we found that it’s a better option for those targeting early signs of aging. Compared to others we tested, it was not as powerful in reducing the appearance of more established lines and loose skin.

Size: 2 oz. | Key Ingredients: Salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid | Skin Type: Normal, dry

Best for Neck and Chest: Fièra Multi-Effect Neck + Décolletage Cream

Pros

  • Fine lines were less noticeable after 8 weeks

  • Skin on the neck felt softer and smoother

  • At around $50, it's one of the more affordable options we tested

Cons

  • We honestly wouldn’t change anything!

We also tested the Fièra Multi-Effect Neck + Décolletage Cream and were impressed by its effects on both our neck and our complexion.

While this formula doesn’t deliver results right away (aside from instant hydration benefits), it’s worth the wait. With regular use, our tester’s complexion felt more hydrated and supple with minimized fine lines, and their décolletage appeared much smoother and softer over time.

In addition to these results, we also loved the formula's lightweight and milky consistency; it's easy to apply and absorbs quickly so you feel like you get the most from the product.

Best for Oily Skin: Lawless Forget the Filler Skin-Plumping Line-Smoothing Perfecting Cream

$52 at Amazon.com

$52 at Sephora.com

Pros

  • Non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic formula won’t clog pores or cause acne

  • Includes caffeine, which has known skin-tightening benefits

Cons

  • Effects are subtle but can help smooth appearance of fine lines over time

If you have oily skin and face creams sound too rich for your complexion, this moisturizer-primer hybrid will totally change your mind. This nourishing formula is both non-comedogenic and non-acnegenic, so it won’t clog pores or cause acne breakouts.

Throughout the testing period, we were impressed by how well it moisturized the complexion while remaining lightweight and breathable on the skin. We also love that it has a more refreshing feeling upon application, which can feel particularly nice if your skin is more sensitive.

We will admit that the tightening effects are super subtle, but with regular use, this cream helps smooth out fine lines by replenishing hydration and supporting the skin’s moisture barrier.

Size: 1.7 oz. | Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid complex, Octapeptide-3, Hexapeptide-8, caffeine, panthenol, black tea ferment | Skin Type: All skin types

Our Experts Say

While no topical product will yield the same results as injectables and plastic surgery, they can help target some concerns. “Tightening creams are a good option for individuals who want noticeable improvements in firmness without the use of cosmetic procedures or surgeries, as these creams are safe, non-invasive, and effective,” says Engelman.

Best with SPF: RoC Multi Correxion 5 in 1 Chest, Neck, and Face Moisturizer Cream with SPF 30

$27 at Amazon.com

See at Rocskincare.com

Pros

  • SPF 30 for added sun protection

  • Usable on the neck, chest, and face

  • Skin looks and feels more hydrated immediately after applying

Cons

  • Our tester wished it included a spatula for application

When using a skin-firming day cream, one with SPF can truly up the ante and prevent future damage caused by the sun. This Roc cream with SPF 30 is an effective option that you can apply to your neck, chest, and face for effective protection.

During the testing period, we also saw a reduction of fine lines — particularly our crow’s feet — and our skin felt a lot tighter (but not in an uncomfortable way). Since this formula is so hydrating, you can see an immediate difference in radiance after the initial application, too.

Size: 1.7 oz. | Key Ingredients: Hexyl-R Complex Technology | Skin Type: All skin types

Best for Sensitive Skin: Shiseido Vital Perfection Uplifting and Firming Eye Cream

See at Shiseido.com

Pros

  • Tightened skin upon first application

  • Improves skin tone and texture over time and strengthens skin barrier

  • Absorbs quickly into the skin

Cons

  • One of the more expensive creams we tested

Some skin-tightening creams feature ingredients that are a little too powerful for sensitive skin types, so if you want something that gets the job done without causing irritation, we recommend this cream from Shiseido.

While testing, we noticed tighter skin upon application every time we used it (though, it only lasted if we used it regularly). We also saw improved skin tone and texture and experienced a comforting dose of hydration, too.

The skin cream has a quick-absorbing consistency that makes it easy to apply regularly and layer with other products in our regimen. Plus, it doesn’t have a scent, an added perk for those with sensitive skin.

Size: 1.69 oz. | Key Ingredients: Kurenai-TruLift Complex, benibana flower, ReNeura Technology++, VP8 technology | Skin Type: Normal to dry skin, including sensitive skin types

Pro Tip!

Dr. Engelman says those who benefit from skin-tightening creams typically have visible signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of skin elasticity. But those with early signs of aging might also benefit since they offer early intervention and slow down the deterioration of the skin’s elasticity and firmness.

Best for Textured Skin: Strivectin Contour Restore Tightening & Sculpting Face Cream

$70 at Amazon.com

$99 at Nordstrom.com

Pros

  • Includes glycolipids, which use water to visibly plump the complexion

  • Noticed a significant improvement in skin texture and brightness

  • Our forehead and neck also looked firmer at the end of the testing period

Cons

  • We wish this came with an application tool

To target texture, consider adding this Strivectin face cream to your regimen. During testing, and especially at the end of eight weeks, we saw significant improvements to our skin texture and brightness thanks to this formula. Our tester could feel that this formula is made to do more than just hydrate the complexion — the tightening effect was noticeable.

While it wasn’t as drastic as, say, a Botox injection, the face cream did yield results after several weeks of regular use, especially on the forehead and neck area. The cream also layers nicely with other skincare formulas and makeup products, making it easy to incorporate into your regular routine (which is necessary for best results).

Size: 1.7 oz., 3.4 oz. | Key Ingredients: Thyme extract liposomes, dipeptides, glycolipids | Skin Type: All skin types

  • Non-comedogenic, so it won’t cause breakouts

  • Stamp of approval from the National Eczema Association

  • Fragrance-free, so it’s safe for sensitive skin types

Cons

  • We wish it targeted the crow’s feet and fine lines around the eyes

This coveted formula from Summer Fridays is enriched with lots of amazing skincare ingredients to provide up to 24 hours of moisture and help diminish the look of fine lines.

Our tester found it provided an immediate veil of comfort thanks to its hydrating and soothing ingredients. The long-lasting hydration levels also help plumped and replenished the complexion (especially around the forehead area) and provided an overall smoothing effect so that fine lines appear a more blurred.

While we wish the cream was also effective at targeting fine lines and crow’s feet around the eyes, we were ultra-happy with the results and think this is a great choice for those concerned with loss of elasticity on the forehead.

What to Know About Skin Tightening Creams

Active Ingredients

Dr. Engelman says active ingredients are fundamental to a formula’s effectiveness. “Certain ingredients are highly effective at stimulating collagen production, hydrating the skin, improving skin elasticity, and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles,” she explains. “Additionally, different ingredients target different aspects of skin aging, so choosing a product with the right combination can yield optimal results.”

These ingredients include retinol, bakuchiol, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin C:

  • Retinol: “Retinol is considered the gold standard for increasing collagen production and cell turnover,” says Dr. Engelman. She adds that this impacts the skin by firming and smoothing the surface. “The ingredient has proven efficacy in reducing signs of aging and improving elasticity, so it’s one of the most important to look for in tightening creams.”

  • Bakuchiol: Bakuchiol is a plant-derived retinol alternative which is the next best option if your skin is sensitive to retinol, Dr. Engelman says. With regular application, this ingredient has similar effects as retinol, but unlike retinol, it doesn’t make your skin sensitive to the sun.

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Hydration is key to supporting elasticity. “Intensely hydrating the skin helps to improve suppleness and firmness, which is exactly what hyaluronic acid does,” says Dr. Engelman. This ingredient is a humectant and can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. “It attracts and retains moisture, helping to plump and hydrate the skin from within, which makes it a more powerful ingredient in tightening creams,” she explains.

  • Vitamin C: When we think of vitamin C, we usually think of its brightening abilities. But as much as we love that for our skin, vitamin C actually plays an important role in skin-tightening efforts, too. “This powerful antioxidant supports collagen production, helping with skin tone, texture, and firmness,” says Dr. Engelman. Additionally, the antioxidants in vitamin C can neutralize free radicals, which Dr. Engelman says protects the skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. “This is great for skin resiliency and preventing signs of aging, making it a valuable addition to skin-tightening formulations.”

Skin Compatibility

“Individuals with oily, dry, sensitive, or combination skin require formulations that address their unique needs in order to avoid causing irritation or exacerbating existing skin issues,” Dr. Engelman tells PEOPLE. If you have acne-prone or oily skin, she recommends lookign for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas.

For those with dry or mature skin types, rich and ultra-hydrating creams are an excellent choice. “Using a cream suitable for your skin type will reduce irritation and maximize effectiveness,” she explains.

Consistency

Skin-tightening creams can work and give you the desired results; however, you can’t fully rely on the cream to get the desired results. Instead, Dr. Engelman emphasizes the importance of committing to your skincare routine and being consistent with the application, or else you might not notice a difference.

“Topical creams typically require regular use over time to achieve and maintain improvements in skin firmness and elasticity,” she explains. “Additionally, the long-term application of skin-tightening creams yields cumulative benefits, gradually enhancing the skin’s texture and appearance.”

Behind the Scenes

To find the best skin-tightening creams, we researched dozens of formulas and selected 23 products for real-world testing. From there, our PEOPLE Tested team spent 1,232 total hours (over eight weeks) trying out each formula and scoring them based on the following testing attributes:

  • Appearance: We made note of several appearance markers, including how our skin looked immediately upon applying the cream to our complexions, whether or not we saw any differences, and how long those immediate results lasted. We also looked at all of the ways in which the creams helped address other skin concerns (aside from tightening) and whether or not our complexions appeared softer, smoother, and more supple after application. Of course, we paid close attention to those tightening benefits, as well.

  • Consistency: Next, we evaluated each formula's consistency. We took detailed notes on how each felt on the skin after application and also considered any side effects such as tingling or burning sensations. We also made note of how long the formulas took to absorb into the skin.

  • Wear: When incorporating skin-tightening creams into your regimen, it’s important to use the product regularly — but you won’t feel inspired to do so if the wear isn’t great. With that in mind, we also tested each of the 23 formulas for their overall wear and considered how comfortable they felt on the complexion, what they smelled like, and how well they layered with other skincare formulas and makeup products.

  • Hydration: In addition to skin-tightening benefits, these creams need to provide ample hydration (after all, that’s part of their purpose!). We considered the hydrating ingredients in each formula and how they performed once in contact with the skin. Additionally, we monitored our hydration levels throughout the day and noted both long-lasting and short-lived hydration results.
