10 art summer camps worth checking out in Albuquerque

Apr. 22—Summer camps are a great way to keep kids busy and entertained while school is out for the summer.

These 10 art camps across Albuquerque cover a variety of fields such as arts and crafts, dance, theater and music.

To compile this list, I sorted through pages of summer camps on Google, mom blogs and social media in search of art camps happening this summer.

Harwood art center summer art camp

This art center will offer various classes for students in first through ninth grade, with half-day or full-day sessions. Activities vary by age range, and cover topics such as comic drawing, print making, improv, weaving, ceramics, poetry and sculpting to name a few.

Albuquerque Little Theatre Musical Camp

Participants in this summer camp will put on a musical of "Disney's Descendants." It is open to performers between the ages of 9 and 17. The camp aims to help young performers become better actors, singers and dancers working as a team to put together a show.

Dimensions School of Dance summer camp

This dance school will host various dance, arts and crafts and music camps based around various themes such as pirates and mermaids, Disney movies and the circus to name a few. There will be a total of 10 sessions throughout a six-week period. Snacks will be provided, but participants should bring their own water bottles. Children ages 3-12 are welcome to participate.

Jazz Camp

This New Mexico Jazz Workshop's camp will build jazz-playing and improv skills. Students will apply theoretical concepts through improvisation, interpretation, arranging and soloing. To be eligible, students must have one year minimum experience playing an instrument and be proficient with scales. This workshop is open to students ages 12 to 18.

A Summer Magical Musical Journey

This one is for the singers, songwriters, instrumentalists, actors, poets and storytellers. The New Mexico School of Music will work with participants to create an all-original story with their own music, following the template of the hero's journey. This workshop is open to students ages 9 to 16. No musical experience is necessary, but participants with their own instruments are asked to bring them to class.

Opera Unlimited presenting Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance"

This summer camp will work toward a fully-staged and costume performances of Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance." The camp is open to students from kindergarten to 12th grade.

LOCATION: Sandia Presbyterian Church, 10704 Paseo del Norte NE

SCHEDULE: 1-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, June 3-July 3; Shows will be July 5 and 6

Rock 101 Summer Sessions

These sessions will start with a crash course exercise on day one, letting students play each instrument and choose which one is the best fit for them. After that, students will be split into groups of beginner, intermediate and advanced to receive personalized instruction in small groups of three or four. At the end of the week, the students will form groups and put on a concert. Students aged 7-11, or Young Guns, will have morning sessions, and those ages 12-18, or the Old School group, will have afternoon sessions.

Stitology Sewing Parlor and Fabric Boutique will host a quilting workshop, including all the supplies necessary to make a quilt top, make an envelope and tie the quilt. This workshop is for ages 8 to 16.

Museum School — Summer Art Camp
