5 Things You Should Do Before 9 a.m.

Need a morning makeover? We’ve got you covered.

There are a number of small actions you can take in the a.m. to start your day off on the right foot, and none of them take all that long to do:

  1. Start your day with a glass of lemon water. It’s good for digestion and also provides a nice dose of vitamin C. It gives “your GI tract the push it needs in the a.m. to get things moving and also reduce fluid retention,” nutritionist Keri Glassman, MS, RN, CDN of Nutritious Life tells Yahoo Health. (Just make sure you drink it before brushing your teeth so the acid from the lemon doesn’t directly hit your tooth enamel!) Not sure how to make it? Check out the (simple) steps here.

  2. Do some energizing yoga poses — they’ll put you in the right headspace for the rest of your day. Need some ideas for a flow? Try this one from CorePower Yoga.

  3. Everyone can benefit from some meditation — so why not do it in the morning before the stress sets on? All it takes is a few minutes of focusing on the present moment. Spiritual teacher Gabrielle Bernstein says even one minute is enough to calm your energy and silence your mind.

  4. Create clear and measurable goals and write them down — you’ll be more likely to complete them. A Harvard study performed over the course of 10 years showed that students who wrote down goals were more successful than those who didn’t.

  5. You really are what you say you are! Affirmations are expressions or ideas that you can repeat to motivate you for your day and remind you of your talents. Choose short, clear ones that are easy to remember, like “I choose to be happy today” or “I choose to forgive and let go of anger.”
