How to Make Dining Hall Sloppy Joes

In 2014’s Ultimate Dining Hall Hacks (Storey Publishing), author Priya Krishna showed college students 75 ways to mix and match dining hall ingredients to concoct marvelous meals. Example: You want cheesecake, but only chocolate cake is available. Solution? Place a sugar cookie in a mug, top it with a few dollops of cream cheese, finish with strawberry jam, and you’ve got cheesecake in a cup. As the school year is almost over, we’re sharing five of Krishna’s hacks throughout this week. Finish strong, students!

Sloppy Joes

I first learned what Sloppy Joes were when I watched the under-appreciated Mary-Kate and Ashley movie, “It Takes Two,” and Mary-Kate (or Ashley?) called them “big, gooey, messy burgers.”  I can guarantee that this Sloppy Joe, which is loaded with plenty of meat and spicy tomato flavor, lives up to both of its names. Make sure you aren’t wearing white when you make this one!

Meatball
Tomato Sauce
Ketchup
Hot Sauce, such as Tabasco
Chili powder
Hamburger bun (toasted, if you want your Sloppy Joe to be less Sloppy)

Top a meatball with a few big spoonfuls of tomato sauce, a generous squirt of ketchup, hot sauce, and a dash of chili powder.

Use a fork to mash the meatball.

Spoon the meat into the hamburger bun.
