Cherry Bombe, the indie magazine about women and food, released its latest cover this morning, and fronting the new issue is Christina Tosi of Milk Bar and “MasterChef.”

Tosi is one of the most prominent pastry chefs in America. Best known in food circles as chef, founder, and owner of Milk Bar, the sister bakery to the Momofuku restaurant group, she’s made a name for herself as the creator of such now-iconic treats as Crack Pie, Compost Cookies, Cereal Milk, and B’day Cake Truffles. Her appearances on late night talk shows, two bestselling cookbooks, and a judge gig on “MasterChef” and “MasterChef Junior” have helped raise her profile beyond cult baker.

In the Cherry Bombe cover story, Tosi talks about the lesser-known parts of her biography and the not-so-obvious path that led to her pastry stardom. There was the college year abroad in Florence where she worked not at a legendary pastry shop, but at… an ambulance company. Then the time as head baker at a New Hampshire hotel not too dissimilar from the one in “The Shining.” Post-culinary school, she even worked as an editorial assistant at Saveur magazine.

Through all of it, the common denominators have been hard work, generosity of spirit, and an extra cup of quirky. Or, as she explains it, “Be silly and be weird and put yourself out there… If you’re not careful, you’ll take yourself way too serious.”
