Mexico-born, Vancouver-based Gabriel Cabrera is the very stylish man behind the Artful Desperado. Check out his site and you’ll quickly see what we mean; the photographer and food stylist’s aesthetic is so elegant, we asked him to share his holiday gift picks with us. And given his recent work with West Elm and Apartment Therapy, we bet you’ll be seeing a lot more of Cabrera soon.

For now, though, we’re keeping the conversation to cake. Cabrera developed the recipe for the delicious one pictured here, starting by browning unsalted butter and then combining it with pear purée. He flavors cake batter with the mixture, baking two layers, and ices them with whipped sour cream. Finally, Cabrera drizzles everything with homemade caramel sauce. “This cake has a rich nutty flavor from brown butter and maple syrup,” he writes. “It also has a nice touch of tanginess from sour cream.” Check out his recipe for a sweet treat that will help get you through the winter months.
