Bryton James is a two-time Daytime Emmy winner, but he says that it’s still a special honor to be nominated for his role as Devon on Young and the Restless as he is again this year. The actor tells Soap Hub that his scenes with leading lady Mishael Morgan, who recurs as Amanda, are on his submission, which could bring him his third Golden Girl in June.

“I woke up [at home] about 15 minutes before I knew they were going to announce the nominees,” James says of where he was when he learned he’d been nominated. “I got a phone call from our amazing publicist Matt Kane, and he shared with me the good news.”

What material from 2023 did Bryton select? “I started it with a scene I did early last year when Devon confronts Tucker [Trevor St. John] and says he found out about his plan to take over Chancellor-Winters and he tells him off,” James shares. The reel also includes makeup scenes with Nate (Sean Dominic) and scenes in which he goes at it with Lily (Christel Khalil) over dividing up the company.

“It ends with the final scene of that storyline and the last scene I ever did [for the year] with Mishael Morgan,” James says.

Is the actor familiar with his fellow nominees? “Robert [Gossett, Marshall, General Hospital, who won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series in 2023], I became familiar with because I had his category to vote in [one year],” James says. “He’s fantastic. I’ve known Wally Kurth [Justin, Days of our Lives for a long time]. He’s been around since before me; he’s also phenomenal. To be acknowledged by our peers means we’re doing a good job. It’s an honor to be in there with all of them.

“I’m definitely going to bring my mom,” James says of who’ll be his guest at the Daytime Emmys. What does he look forward to each time he attends? “My favorite thing to do is to party with the cast afterwards and to see faces you don’t usually get to see in the soap world.”

Bryton James had to celebrate his last win in 2020 in this category during COVID when the Daytime Emmys were handed out virtually. “We got to see each other over Zoom,” he recalls.

The 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards are set to air on Friday, June 7 on CBS at 8 p.m. ET. The awards will also stream on Paramount+.
