Why Blake Lively Skipped the 2024 Met Gala

The 2024 Met Gala came and went, but for fans of fashion's big night out, there were a few notable omissions from the red carpet rundown. Perhaps chief among them was Blake Lively, who has garnered serious Met Gala clout over the years and become a firm favorite of Gala watchers. This marks the second year in a row that Lively has skipped out on the event.

While neither Lively nor her husband Ryan Reynolds have said why they chose to opt out of this year's appearance, Elle reports that the duo spent a quiet night in. Many were initially hopeful that the actress would be making a showing at the The Garden of Time themed carpet after she attended an event for Tiffany & Co. in New York last week, but it seems that the Met Gala simply wasn't in the cards.

Over the years, Lively has made a name for herself as a Met Gala maven, frequently gracing best dressed lists for her stunning sartorial choices, like the Versace gown she wore in 2022 that was inspired by NYC landmarks including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the ceiling of Grand Central Station. The dress garnered such attention, it later went on to be displayed at Kensington Palace where Lively caused a stir by hopping the velvet rope of the exhibit to adjust the dress on its mannequin.

With nearly a dozen Met Gala appearances under her belt, fans were disappointed when Lively opted out of the 2023 event as well, though she had an excellent reason—just two months earlier she gave birth to her and Reynolds's fourth child. At the time she joked that she'd be wearing her previous Met Gala look on the couch for the big night.
