Tiffany Haddish is opening up about her health struggles in her newly-announced memoir, I Curse You With Joy.

“My body be playing tricks on me,” said the actress, 44, in a recent chat with PEOPLE. “I’m pretty sure the devil is real because the first day of my period, no matter what, the devil goes into overdrive. I feel like my life gets turned upside down.”

Recently, Haddish learned that the debilitating pain was caused by endometriosis. In years prior, doctors told her that the pain was caused by “a dent in [her] uterus.”

She explained, “It turns out it’s not a dent they saw on the ultrasound. It was endo that was hanging down. It looked like a dent but it was just extra layers.” One side effect of endometriosis is potential pregnancy loss and for Haddish. She’s tragically had eight miscarriages, but did her best to do right by her body while pregnant.

“Every time I find out I’m pregnant, I’m like, ‘Don’t drink, don’t smoke, don’t do nothin’,” said the Girls Trip actress. “Even if I don’t really want [the baby], I still try to give it a chance.” Her latest miscarriage was last year. She recalled there being “so much blood” and doctors “performed a D&C (dilation and curettage, a procedure to remove pregnancy tissue).”

Despite being single and dating, Haddish shared she is celibate, saying she isn’t fully sure about the idea of getting remarried or having children. She did admit to PEOPLE that “there is a part of me that wants to [have children],” adding, “I’ve got all this love, I should give it to somebody who can grow with it.”

The comedian is not only celibate, but also sober. After being arrested for driving under the influence and sued over alleged child sexual abuse, Haddish said it was then that her “world fell apart.” However, she reportedly hasn’t had a drink since the arrest and also felt sex and alcohol went hand-in-hand.

“With alcohol, [my mind] would just be like, ‘You’re horny, let’s just do it,’” Haddish explained of her decision to pursue sobriety and abstinence. “This is my challenge to people. Stop drinking for six months and just see how your life changes,” she continued, joking that “I was waking up next to ugly men.”

She credited her past for helping to clean up her life: “I hated that I had to go through that, but I had to so I could create better, know better, and do better.”
