Sydney Sweeney Explains Why “Anyone But You” Wouldn't Exist Without “Madame Web”: 'Don't Laugh at' It

Sydney Sweeney described the relationship she built with Sony while making 'Madame Web' as "such a building block for" her career

Sydney Sweeney is letting audiences in on how she is ensuring her film projects get produced.

The actress, 26, appeared at 92NY in New York City on Wednesday for a conversation with Happy Sad Confused podcast host Josh Horowitz.

The interview covered Sweeney's role on HBO's Euphoria and her recent movies, the romantic comedy Anyone But You and February's Madame Web.

"I want to point out the timeline of projects and explain a few things. So — don’t laugh at that!" she said, responding to audience laughter at the mention of Madame Web, which proved a box office flop and received negative reviews upon its theatrical release.

"Madame Web is my first-ever studio project, studio film that I ever got cast in. And I am so thankful to Sony because it was such a building block for me, and while I was filming that I was actually building the packages for both Immaculate and Anyone But You," she said, also noting her new horror movie, in theaters Friday.

The actress-producer said she pitched Anyone But You to the studio based on the relationship she developed by starring in Madame Web along with Dakota Johnson.

"I called up Sony and I said, ‘Hey, I have this movie. We’re filming together, let’s build a relationship,' " she recalled during the talk. "And that’s how Anyone But You got made. I would never have been able to do that without Madame Web."

Sweeney received her first two producing credits on Anyone But You and Immaculate. She was credited as an executive producer on the former film, in which she and Glen Powell played enemies-turned-lovers at an Australian-set wedding. Anyone But You has made $214.8 million at the box office worldwide since it released in December, and both her and Powell, 35, have indicated they are looking for another project to develop together.

The Euphoria star has been open about using her Madame Web role to further other career opportunities in recent days. Sweeney recently told British GQ she "wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers" at Sony, with whom she is also developing a remake of Jane Fonda's 1968 movie Barbarella, if it were not for Madame Web.

“Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions," she told that outlet.

While hosting Saturday Night Live earlier this month, Sweeney made a joke in her opening monologue at the expense of the superhero movie: "You might have seen me in Anyone But You or Euphoria," the actress began, before joking, "You definitely did not see me in Madame Web."
