Spring is all about rebirth, and the 2024 hair trends for the season are no different.

After the more toned-down looks of fall and winter, the latest trends will be centered around bringing life back into hairstyles.

“I think we will see an emphasis on dimension,” Sarah Potempa, celebrity hairstylist and co-founder of The Beachwaver, tells PEOPLE. “For cut, the dimension comes from the layering whereas with color, its dimension will be added through highlights and colored undertones.”

Celebrities like Dua Lipa, Jenna Ortega and Zendaya are leading the charge this season, upgrading their looks with fresh new colors, elegant cuts and simple styling hacks that make all the difference.

Ahead, celebrity stylists share their top predictions for spring 2024 hair trends — from cuts to colors to accessories.

Medium-Length Layers

Nothing says cool-girl chic quite like effortless, tousled waves. Celebrity hairstylist Marki Shkreli points to his client Sienna Miller’s go-to style for her shoulder-length blonde hair.

“Her tousled locks exude a sense of natural beauty and charm, making effortless waves a must-have style for those seeking a casual yet polished appearance,” he says.

At the salon, Shkreli recommends asking for long layers to “enhance movement and natural wave.”

Round Curly Cuts

For more volume and body, those with curly hair are turning to rounded cuts. Celebrities like Tracee Ellis Ross and Yara Shahidi have embraced their natural texture with lots of round layers.

“Go to a stylist that knows how to cut curly hair,” Potempa advises. “You’ll ask your stylist for round layers, which is having them cut shorter layers in the front and upper sections of the hair. This is going to leave the hair fuller and blended.”

Modern Shag

The shag was at the forefront of the recent wave of nostalgic hair trends, and in 2024, it’s getting a sleeker, chicer makeover. Potempa points to celebrities like Ortega and Camila Cabello who have been embracing the edgy style.

“The modern shag is a great cut for adding movement and texture to the hair,” she says. “It consists of softer layers and a wispy bang for a full and wavy feel.”

At the salon, Potempa emphasizes the importance of bringing reference photos and recommends asking for “lots of layers that are shorter towards the face.”

Shkreli points to actress Kathryn Newton’s style as an elevated, glamorous take on the shag.

“Newton's modern long shag offers a unique and modern twist to the classic fringe hairstyle,” he explains. “The feathered texture adds movement and depth, enhancing her overall appearance and making a strong case for this trend in the spring of 2024.”

Pixie Cuts

It may seem like getting a pixie cut would pigeonhole you into a specific look, but the style is more versatile than you may think.

“[Pixie cuts] can be edgy or chic depending on how styled,” Potempa says.

The key, she continues, is asking your stylist for plenty of volume at the top so you can add texture.

“Since this cut exposes a lot of your face shape, I recommend looking for inspo pics of pixie cuts on people with similar features such as face shape,” the stylist adds.

Zoë Kravitz has been known to love the shorter style; in 2022, she paired the daring cut with her signature baby bangs. In March 2024, Zoey Deutch debuted a similar cut, with a brave platinum blonde update.

Longer Bobs

This take on the bob trend is great for those who want to freshen up their look but aren’t ready to commit to a cut above the shoulders, Potempa says.

At the salon, the stylist recommends picking a length slightly shorter than what you envisioned, especially if your hair grows fast.

“You should also tell your stylist if you want your longer lob to be asymmetrical — shorter in the back — or not,” she adds. “This cut has so many different variations, so it is important to be specific when going to consult with your stylist.”

Spring 2024 Hair Colors

Taupe Brunette

Justin Anderson, celebrity colorist and dpHUE co-founder, is loving this ashy-toned take on all the brunette trends that have emerged lately.

“When you think ‘taupe’ think of a blend of muted, neutral, mushroom-colored hues,” he says. “It’s a good mix up from the richer variations of brunette hues we’ve been seeing recently.”

Anderson notes that while this shade looks effortless, it may require more maintenance to keep the neutral tone intact. He recommends incorporating a toning shampoo and conditioner.

“This will help neutralize any redness, warmth or brassiness that taupe-colored strands tend to fade into,” he explains.

At the salon, ask your stylist for a neutral, cool, ashy brunette. Anderson adds that it’s also important to bring in plenty of reference photos that showcase “the level of coolness and range of hue you are going for.”

“Old Money” Blonde

Move over, cool-toned blonde — warm golden blonde is back for spring and summer. This rich, dimensional look is a great way to warm up your complexion and add an overall glow.

“Warmer shades like honey, butterscotch, or a rich buttery blonde will instantly give you a brightened, more lively look,” says Anderson.

“Talk to your colorist about the look you are wanting to achieve,” he adds. “Whether you’re looking for more all over color, balayage, or added dimension, this shade range is a perfect complement to light and medium complexions and can easily transition between seasons.”

Burgundy Brunette

These days, a new season inevitably brings about a new red hair trend. Dua Lipa, who has recently started experimenting with red tones, perfectly captures the latest take on the trend: burgundy brunette.

“This vibrant, deep red hue with violet tones and a dark brown base is such a head turner,” says Anderson. “However, be prepared for a lot of at-home care and more frequent salon visits.”

To ensure your best red, he recommends finding a skilled colorist who can minimize damage and provide you with an at-home routine to keep your color looking its best.

“My advice — ditch the hot tools, or use a color safe heat protectant when styling your burgundy locks,” Anderson adds. He also recommends skipping shampoo when possible, as washing your hair too much can cause color to fade.

Brunette with Caramel Highlights

If you’re looking to lighten up your look for spring but aren’t ready for a full-blonde transformation, adding caramel highlights is the way to go.

“Caramel tones can be extremely versatile and can easily change up your look depending on the coloring technique used,” says Anderson. “I love seeing soft caramel balayage with added face-framing highlights or caramel baby lights blended throughout a rich color base.”

Another benefit of this look is that it doesn’t require much maintenance. “You really can’t go wrong here — it just depends on your personal preference and desired look,” the colorist explains. “This is a super low-maintenance color trend as well since it grows out beautifully — meaning less trips to the salon for touch ups, which we love!”

Pastel Pink

Looking to make a statement this spring? Pastel pink is this spring’s most eye-catching hair trend. Kylie Jenner even surprised fans with pink locks in January — a nod to her “King Kylie” Instagram presence in 2016.

“If you are looking to dive in and explore a cotton candy hue, the first thing to do is consult with good colorist who is familiar with fashion tones,” Anderson advises. “Depending on the starting point of your strands, you’ll want to make sure your hair is in good health and can make the transition without jeopardizing the integrity of your hair.”

Potempa, who has experimented with various shades of pink herself, warns that depending on your base shade, going pink may involve more bleaching than you expect.

“For me as a brunette, to achieve a vibrant pink it requires a double process,” she says. “I recommend researching a stylist known for their color and showing them photos of what you are looking for. When searching for inspo pics, try searching for images of hair with a similar base color and texture so that you can have a good idea of how a shade will look on you.”

Because bleaching can cause damage, you’ll want to keep your freshly dyed strands nourished with a weekly hair mask.

Deep Side Part

Just when you thought the middle part was here to stay, the side part has made a comeback. Celebrities like Zendaya and Rachel Zegler have proved that a deep side part in particular can make for a glamorous, vintage-inspired look.

“A deep side part can help to ramp up the volume and add a touch of glamor,” says Potempa. “This is a great hair hack for someone with thin hair to appear more voluminous.”

Face-Framing Tendrils

Antonia Gentry Instagram
Antonia Gentry.

It-girls like Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner have helped popularize this face-framing look, which is a great way to soften an updo.

To create a messy bun with face-framing tendrils, Potempa recommends starting with a heat protectant that also offers a flexible hold. Next, curl hair in alternating directions and spray your waves with the heat protectant again, before raking your fingers through for added hold.

“Leaving a few sections out in the front, create a high ponytail, and pinch and pull hair at the root for volume,” Potempa says. “Split the hair into two sections and create a knot, then pancake to create volume, and pin in place.”

Twist and pin the remaining pieces around the knot before finishing with texture spray for added security. Finally, curl the face-framing pieces and add a spritz of shine spray for a shiny and sleek finish.

Small Braids

Adding in small braids to any style is an easy way to add texture and dimension to a variety of styles. At the 2024 Super Bowl, Taylor Swift amped up her ponytail with a braid along the side of her head, while Lana Condor spiced up her Paris Fashion Week look with two face-framing twists.

Potempa says that this subtle addition incorporates dimension into an otherwise simple look.

Brigitte Bardot-Inspired Headbands

Headbands have continued to be a major trend in 2024, and this spring, celebrities are putting a glamorous, vintage-inspired twist on the look.

Thicker headbands worn closer to the hairline — as seen on Alix Earle at Paris Fashion Week — give a decidedly Brigitte Bargot feel. “These versatile pieces fuse classic Hollywood glamor with a modern twist,” Shkreli says of the accessory.

“Pair the headband with loose waves or sleek ponytail,” the stylist suggests. “You can wear this with an evening look or sporty day time look.”

Silk Bows

The coquette trend isn’t going anywhere. In 2024, expect to see a lot of silk bows as hair accessories, whether it’s in the form of a barrette or simply tied around a ponytail or updo.

“Silk bows offer a timeless and sophisticated vibe that goes well with various outfits,” says Shkreli. “Simply secure your hair with an elastic band and add a black or navy-blue silk bow for that extra touch of class.”
