Rebecca Yarros Has a New Book Coming — And It's Full of Family Drama (Exclusive)

The latest standalone novel from the author of the bestselling Empyrean Series will hit shelves this fall

Attention all Empyrean Riders: Rebecca Yarros has a new book coming. And this time, there's not a single dragon in sight.

The bestselling author's newest, Variation, is coming out this fall and it'll be a departure from her celebrated Empyrean Series. It's being released by Montlake, an imprint of Amazon Publishing.

In Variation, a celebrated ballerina named Allie suffers a career-ending injury. While figuring out what to do with her life without dance, she also has to deal with the fallout from long-buried family secrets and a very complex relationship with her ailing mother. Then, the daughter her late sister gave up for adoption years ago shows up on her doorstep — and her niece also brings Allie's own first love, Hudson, back into the picture.

"I’m thrilled to be partnering with Amazon Publishing for the release of my next contemporary romance," Yarros tells PEOPLE, in a statement. "They're such a supportive, incredible team to work with, and I can’t wait for readers to fall in love with Allie and Hudson's story and the years of family secrets that surface when these two collide after years apart."

Readers may know Yarros best for her mega-hit Empyrean series, which kicked off with Fourth Wing in April 2023, and follows Violet Sorrengail as she navigates her first year at Basgiath War College, all while on her way to becoming an elite dragon rider. Violet’s story continued during a treacherous second year at the school in Iron Flame, which was published in the fall of 2023. The third book in the series, Onyx Storm, hits shelves in January 2025.

In October 2023, a TV series based on the books was announced by Amazon MGM studios, per Variety. The author will serve as a non-writing executive producer on the series.

Yarros is the #1 New York Times, USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of over 15 novels including Fourth Wing and In the Likely Event. She’s married to her very own military hero, the mother of six children and lives in Colorado.

Having fostered then adopted their youngest daughter, who is nonverbal and on the autism spectrum, Yarros is passionate about helping children in the foster system through her nonprofit, One October, which she co-founded with her husband in 2019.

Variation will come out Oct. 8 from Montlake, an imprint of Amazon Books, and is available for preorder now, wherever books are sold.
