There’s no bigger critic than the self.

In a surprising turn of events, the two-time Oscar-winner and heavily influential Hollywood personality Quentin Tarantino has reportedly ditched his in-development project, “The Movie Critic.”

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the film – about which there has been tremendous speculation but few hard facts – had been eyed as the director’s much-ballyhooed “tenth and final” project. Instead, at the moment, Tarantino has decided to put it in the ashcan. THR’s sources say that what began as a profile of a movie reviewer – possibly writing for a pornographic publication in the 1970s, and possibly including different endings to movies of the period like “Rolling Thunder” (as per an interview with Paul Schrader) – had slowly began to morph into a “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” sequel or prequel, with Brad Pitt reprising his Oscar-winning supporting role of stuntman Cliff Booth. There had also been talk about Paul Walter Hauser starring as the titular critic. Tom Cruise had also been bandied about as a potential costar.

No studio was attached to the project, but there was an understanding that Sony would likely reprise their role as distributor as they had on “Once Upon a Time…” Before that film in 2019, all of Tarantino’s work was handled by Miramax or The Weinstein Company.

Tarantino has cried wolf like this once before. In 2014, the screenplay for “The Hateful Eight” leaked online and at the time Tarantino said he was pulling the plug. Maybe falling in and out of love with something is just part of his process. With that in mind, maybe he’ll one day realize his self-imposed limit of ten feature films and then retirement is a little silly. If so, maybe the director, who lives partially in Tel Aviv, can get that “Star Trek” project out of him.
