Yesterday, King Charles hosted the Sovereign's Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, which included appearances from Prince William and four of his six cousins. While that seems like a pretty good turnout from the royals, it was clear to many eagle-eyed fans that without Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle, the guest list seemed thin. This observation led to some speculation that Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice would step up and join the ranks of William and Catherine among royal watchers. However, those pipe dreams may not be what actually happens, according to insiders.

According to Hello, Eugenie and Beatrice don't have any firm plans to add royal duties to their packed schedules, with sources telling the outlet that “this is not the current plan for now.” Currently, Beatrice is the vice president of strategic partnerships at tech firm Afiniti, and Eugenie is the director of Hauser & Wirth, an art gallery in London.

“Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and their cousins were at the garden party to support the Prince of Wales because the princess is continuing her recovery, but they are not taking on official roles,” Emily Nash, the newspaper's royal editor, added. “They’ve attended royal engagements in the past, sometimes ‘in attendance’ with the late queen, for example, so they might appear at other events over the summer as members of the king’s family.”

In addition to Eugenie and Beatrice, Princess Anne’s two children, Peter Philipps and Zara Tindall, were also in attendance at the garden party yesterday along with Mike Tindall, Zara's husband, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Richard and Birgitte. According to the official royal website, the duke and duchess are "full-time working member[s] of the royal family."

The speculation around Beatrice, Eugenie, and other royals joining the ranks of working royals comes as King Charles wanted to slim down the monarchy last year, not knowing that he'd be sidelined with a cancer diagnosis and that Kate Middleton would also be resting as she recovers from her cancer and subsequent preventative chemotherapy.

“Help from other family members is scant,” Tina Brown, royal expert and author of The Diana Chronicles, noted. “The slimmed-down monarchy that Charles always promoted is suddenly looking very lean indeed.”

Zara and Mike “are understood to be a vital cog in the royal family machine, bringing qualities of good humor, enthusiasm, and positivity,” Tatler adds.

Mike is a former rugby player and Zara competed at the 2012 Olympics in London in equestrian events. Neither of them has an official royal title.

“The Tindalls are very much the glue of their generation of royals and bring the fun to a family gathering, no matter how serious the occasion," a source told The Times. "They can help take the family’s mind off the gravity of what is going on.”
