The Delinquency Status of Harry & Meghan's Archewell Foundation Is Quickly Resolved

Update, 5/14/2024: On Tuesday, an additional statement about the situation was shared by an Archewell Foundation spokesperson, which reads:

“We have diligently investigated the situation and can confirm that The Archewell Foundation remains fully compliant and in good standing. Due payments were made promptly and in accordance with the IRS’s processes and procedures. Furthermore, all necessary paperwork had been filed by the Foundation without error or wrongdoing.”

California's Department of Justice also confirmed to T&C over e-mail that the Archewell Foundation "is current and in good standing." In addition, Governor Gavin Newsom said, "I just want folks to know, not only are they in compliance, it was a technical paperwork issue that was wildly over-hyped."

Original, 5/13/2024: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Archewell Foundation was declared delinquent by California's registry of charities and fundraisers, and ordered to stop fundraising.

The New York Post first reported that Archewell let the official registration fees for their charity lapse. "An organization that is listed as delinquent is not in good standing and is prohibited from engaging in conduct for which registration is required, including soliciting or disbursing charitable funds," the letter from California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, reads. "The organization may also be subject to penalties and its registration may be suspended or revoked by the Registry."

Town & Country understands that everything was filed on time by the Archewell Foundation, but a physical check included with the filing was never received. The foundation was only made aware of the missing check when the delinquency notice was published. A new check has reportedly been mailed, and the delinquency status is expected to be dismissed shortly.

Harry and Meghan launched their Archewell Foundation in 2020. Per the organization's site, "Our mission is simple: show up, do good. We meet the moment by showing up, taking action and using our unparalleled spotlight to uplift and unite communities — local and global — through acts of service and compassion. We believe that philanthropy is not a handout; it’s a hand held. At The Archewell Foundation, we roll up our sleeves and do just that. We consciously partner with key organizations and leaders to identify immediate needs, build meaningful initiatives, and drive long-term change. We are committed to uncovering and resolving the root causes of issues, prioritizing lasting solutions over temporary fixes."

On their recent trip to Nigeria, the Sussexes undertook numerous engagements related to the Archewell Foundation, including a Mental Health Summit in Abuja.
