Nicki Minaj has been having a lot of fun on her “Pink Friday 2” tour. From fan interactions, to surprise guest stars, to wardrobe malfunctions, it’s been an action-packed trip for the “Barbie World” artist. With all this energy following her to every tour stop, you knew the New York shows were going to be extra special.

During her concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Wednesday, Nicki took a few minutes to celebrate another New York native. The “Super Freaky Girl” rapper surprised the crowd by bringing out iconic singer Cyndi Lauper for a cool mash up of “Pink Friday Girls” and the ‘89s classic, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” They finished their duet with a mutual show of love and respect, bowing to one another. “Make some noise for this icon, this legend,” Minaj said.

They also took a few moments to sing Lauper’s timeless ballad “True Colors,” with Nicki telling her fans, “Don’t wait until we’re not here to give us our flowers. God bless this woman. Thank you Cyndi; we love you. I have been speaking about this woman in my interviews since I first began rapping. I never in a million years thought I’d be back rapping in New York with Cyndi Lauper.”

In case you weren’t born yet in the ‘80s, Cyndi Lauper and Madonna broke out at the same time and were often pitted against one another as direct competition. While they both put out catchy pop songs that topped the charts, Cyndi was an unapologetically unique force of nature who appealed to the weird kids. She was the complete opposite of Madonna’s sex symbol, delivering a more artistic presentation.

When you listen to Nicki’s more heartfelt, emotional ballads, it’s easy to hear Lauper’s influence. And obviously, the rapper’s colorful, chaotic stage presentation is definitely reminiscent of the “Time After Time” singer’s signature ‘80s style.

I don’t agree with Nicki on much, but she’s absolutely right, Cyndi Lauper is underappreciated and deserves more flowers for her longevity and influence.
