The criticism of Meghan Markle on the internet has been well-documented over the years since she joined the royal family. A quick glimpse at X is all you need to see to understand why she’s stayed far away from social media over the last seven years — protecting her peace is a top priority. Now, one Hollywood A-lister is also jumping to her defense after they briefly worked together in 2021.

Melissa McCarthy doesn’t have time for the Duchess of Sussex’s critics because it’s disappointing for her to see that the hate often comes from other women. “It bums me out for every woman and every person, that for no reason people just like to attack,” the Gilmore Girls star revealed to Page Six. The two-time Oscar nominee would rather celebrate a successful woman instead of knocking her down. “I always think, how inspiring! I’ve never once been threatened by someone who is amazing,” she added. “I just think how inspiring. It’s really on the people throwing the hate.”

Fans will remember McCarthy’s cameo in Meghan’s 40th birthday video for her 40×40 initiative. The comedic banter between the two women was adorable as the Bridesmaids star donned her best fascinator and gloves for her royal-adjacent appearance. The Duchess of Sussex then went on to describe her birthday mission, “Because I’m turning 40, I’m asking 40 friends to donate 40 minutes of their time to help mentor a woman who’s mobilizing back into the workforce.” McCarthy told the outlet that she enjoyed working with the Suits actress on the project while praising her for being “wonderful” and “awesome.”

Meghan spoke openly about the online bullying she’s been the recipient of at a recent South by Southwest panel in Austin, Texas, via NBC News. She revealed that it’s why she’s keeping her “distance from [social media] right now just for my own well-being.” She added, “You really wrap your head around why people would be so hateful. It’s not catty, it’s cruel.” Like McCarthy, she noted that it’s astonishing “how much of the hate is women completely spewing that to other women.”

The Duchess of Sussex believes that “systemic change has to happen at the same time as the cultural change is happening” for social media to be a safe space for everyone. “I think that is the piece that is so lost right now, and what’s happening in the digital space and in certain sectors in the media — we have forgotten about our humanity,” she pointed out. It will be fascinating to watch how Meghan navigates social media with the launch of American Riviera Orchard because the brand will need her presence to make an impact. It’s now about preserving peace while pressing ahead with her beloved projects.
