What is The Lord of the Rings?

“The Lord of the Rings follows a shy young hobbit named Frodo Baggins inherits a simple gold ring. He knows the ring has power, but not that he alone holds the secret to the survival — or enslavement — of the entire world. Now Frodo, accompanied by a wizard, an elf, a dwarf, two men and three loyal hobbit friends, must become the greatest hero the world has ever known to save the land and the people he loves,” reads the synopsis.

Based on the best-selling novels of J.R.R. Tolkien, the epic fantasy film trilogy hails from director and producer Peter Jackson. The trilogy was led by Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Sean Astin as Samwise Gamgee, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, John Rhys-Davies as Gimli, Billy Boyd as Pippin, and Dominic Monaghan as Merry. It also featured Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Liv Tyler, Andy Serkis, and more.

The franchise went on to earn a combined gross of over $2.9 billion worldwide. It gained a total of 30 Oscar nominations and won 17 of them, including Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Due to the success of original trilogy, Warner Bros. produced another trilogy centered around The Hobbit prequel novel, which garnered worldwide gross of nearly $3 billion, just like the first trilogy.
