Is Kevin Costner in or out for the second half of Season 5 of Yellowstone? That’s the question fans have been asking for months and the 69-year-old actor gave an update that might give everyone some hope.

Costner was a CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday to share a clip from his upcoming movie, Horizon: An American Saga, but Entertainment Tonight made sure to ask the hot TV question. The answer may not satisfy everyone, but it sounds like the door is wide open for John Dutton to make an appearance. “I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to,” he teased. “…I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we’re at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will.”

YELLOWSTONE, Kevin Costner, Winning or Learning’, (Season 4, ep. 404, aired Nov. 21, 2021).

Coster seems hopeful that Yellowstone and his beloved character with “circle back” to him at some point. “If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it,” he added. The Oscar winner was also careful not to step on co-creator Taylor Sheridan’s toes when he was asked about how his character’s storyline would wrap up. “Well, you know, he needs to be proactive in what happens and I’ve kind of had my own fantasy how it might be, but that’s Taylor’s thing,” Costner carefully said. “I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see.”

The rumors about Coster and Sheridan’s contentious working relationship seemed to be smoothed over now that the first two installments of Horizon are done. Costner’s production schedule on the films conflicted with some of Yellowstone‘s plans, but a writers and actors’ strike also threw a wrench into everyone’s calendar. Now, Puck News believes there is hope for the men to come together and finish out the series.

“Even if Costner significantly lowers his financial and time commitment demands, Sheridan may not want to bother reopening his finished scripts to accommodate a send-off for John Dutton,” the outlet noted in late March. “But the Yellowstone fans would certainly love it, which Costner knows and hopes to leverage, as he always does.”

Costner just threw an olive branch to Sheridan, and now, it’s up to the showrunner to reply and give the fans what they want — John Dutton back on the scene.
