Prince Louis — our favorite little 5-year-old prince — will be our favorite little 6-year-old prince tomorrow because apparently we’re living in some kind of time warp where he’s growing up that! fast!

The young royal’s big day is reminding people of mom Kate Middleton’s yearly tradition. The Princess of Wales said in 2019 that she doesn’t miss a moment of her children’s birthdays. As soon as the clock strikes midnight, she’s ready to go with a cake in hand!

“It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ‘til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing and I make far too much,” she said on the BBC program A Berry Royal Christmas with Mary Berry, per The Independent. “But I love it.”

How sweet and down-to-earth is that? Now, who knows if her new 6-year-old will get a midnight wake-up call for a slice, but at least the cake will be ready to go and Middleton can cherish the moment his birthday begins.

That is, of course, if she follows her normal routine. This year has been anything but normal for the Princess of Wales. With her ongoing health concerns and cancer treatments, she may not be up for staying up that late or making the cake herself, but we’re sure she’ll get immense joy from celebrating her youngest’s birthday.

It was speculated back in March that — despite the circumstances — Middleton must be enjoying the uninterrupted time with her kids. And the same must have been true for them! After all, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis don’t get to see their mom as much as the average kid with the average mom.

“She has been able to spend plenty of time with her children at home over the past few weeks and they will have been such a tonic for her,” Royal Editor Emily Nash told Hello! “Her family are absolutely at the center of her world, so being able to have George, Charlotte, and Louis at home with her has no doubt really boosted her spirits.”

A family celebration will likely boost them even further — as long as there are no photo hiccups. Royal birthdays are often accompanied by a new portrait of the young royal, and, given the disastrous and alarming family photo that was shared to quell conspiracy theories surrounding Middleton’s whereabouts, there’s a lot of pressure.

If Buckingham Palace releases a new photo of Prince Louis, it will be put under the microscope by media outlets worldwide. They’ll be counting his fingers (some of which were missing in the family’s holiday card and in That Photo) and making sure not a hair is out of place.

But while outlets and agencies and followers pick up their magnifying glasses, we hope the Wales family can pick up their forks, and dig into some well-deserved birthday cake.
