On Monday, the team behind “The Chosen” announced that all episodes of Season 4 will be released in theaters nationwide starting on Feb. 1.

“The Chosen” is an epic historical drama that takes place during the time of Jesus and illustrates his life. The Angel Original show debuted in 2019 with the episode “I Have Called You by Name,” which culminates with Jesus healing Mary Magdalene. Since then, the audience has seen Jesus as a performer of miracles, a preacher and as the Son of God.

Season 3 ended with a depiction of the story of Jesus walking on water. Jesus saves Simon from drowning and calms the storm as the disciples look on from the boat. At this point in the show, the Romans have already sensed that Jesus may spark turmoil for them and they have started to try to prevent Jesus’ influence from growing larger.

It’s worth noting the show is more than halfway over heading into Season 4. “The Chosen” is expected to run for seven total seasons with eight episodes in each season, which means the show is approaching the most difficult hours of Jesus’ life.

So, what should viewers expect to see in Season 4?

‘The Chosen’ Season 4 plot

As show creator Dallas Jenkins said previously in a video, “Season 4, I think, so far is going to be our most emotionally challenging season. There was the year of preparation, the year of population is happening and he’s increasing in popularity. Season 4 is where it starts to turn.”

“We’re getting closer to Jerusalem. As we get closer to Holy Week, the themes are bigger,” Jenkins told The Christian Post.

While the exact plot details of Season 4 are under wraps, Jenkins told Fox News some of what the audience can expect. He noted that “The Chosen” is building toward the passion, which is the events directly precipitating Jesus’ crucifixion such as the last supper with his disciples, his prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and his trial before Pontius Pilate.

A weighty atmosphere permeates Season 4. “So, I know that’s not necessarily the best advertisement for a show to say that this season is going to be — to have a lot of sadness. But I think it’s an important part of the story,” Jenkins told Fox News.

“Now I will say also there’s lots of joy, there’s lot of laughter, there’s lots of miracles that we get to experience, which is one of reasons why we want people to see this on the big screen and see this together,” he said to Fox News. “But Season 4 is a time where the fact that people around Jesus just aren’t quite getting it and the reason that he’s here does start to get bigger and more important in his ministry.”

Enemies will become a bigger part of the show. “These enemies are supervillains, if you will, to use a Marvel term,” president of production Mark Sourian told media at a press conference earlier this month.

More specific details about Season 4 are unknown at this point, but Jenkins has revealed some details about future seasons in an interview with Deadline.

Spoiler alert!

When asked what season the crucifixion will occur, Jenkins told Deadline, “Season six and the resurrection will occur in season seven.”

He added he doesn’t have to make the crucifixion scene graphic because “The Passion of the Christ” already did that.

“If I just showed the faces of the disciples watching the crucifixion, that will be emotionally and spiritually devastating,” Jenkins said.
