Hallmark’s Victor Webster Teases New ‘Hannah Swensen Mystery’ Role and Reuniting With Alison Sweeney

With One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery set to premiere on Hallmark Mystery this Friday, Woman's World sat down with new addition, Victor Webster. The Wedding Veil trilogy hunk and Days of our Lives alum talks about playing the new man in Hannah’s life, reuniting with costar Alison Sweeney, and what it was like to have the Hallmark beauty write for him.

What to expect from Hallmark’s One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery

When Alison Sweeney’s Hannah Swensen agrees to teach a baking class in a college town, it blows up in her face – literally. The fire department initially rules Hannah’s exploding equipment an accident, but she’s suspicious, especially once one of her colleagues shows up dead.

As usual, Hannah pulls her friends and family into solving this mystery — which prosecuting attorney Chad Norton won’t appreciate.

“My introduction is kind of slow in the beginning,” Victor Webster teases in character. “They roll me out in this not confrontational, but not super warm or welcoming way. I'm very by the book and a man of few words. I'm not a jerk…but I’ve got things to do and places to go. I don't have time to chit-chat.”

And while viewers have already seen what Hannah can do over the course of eight Hallmark mysteries, newcomer Chad is reasonably skeptical about this crime-solving baker.

“I don't need somebody coming in and possibly destroying my case, messing with evidence, leaking leads – and that's what Hannah threatens to do by just being involved,” the actor huffs. "She's just a civilian, so she should be reading about all of this in the newspaper, not getting involved in the investigation!”

The attorney’s concern is only heightened by the fact that this time, Hannah is not just stepping in on an investigation. It looks like she’s either the target…or the lead suspect!

“She's way too close to everything that's going on, to the point where she's putting herself in danger,” Webster teases. “And that's not something I'm happy with.”

Naturally, Hannah will play to her strengths to soften up this new guy.

“She's very tempting with her baked goods,” Webster cracks. “She tries to butter me up with her cookies, tarts and such. And I come to appreciate how smart and skillful she is. Not that I let her know that!”

In October’s A Zest for Death: A Hannah Swensen Mystery, it looked like the romance was back on for Hannah and Cameron Mathison’s Mike. Then Mathison jumped from Hallmark to Great American Family, which meant he couldn’t return for the series and presumably put Hannah back on the market.

As the newcomer in One Bad Apple, Webster teases there’s “potential” for a new romance between Hannah and his character.

“It starts off very cold and professional, and then it warms up,” he says. “There's a little twinkle that gives us hope for something in the future.”

In fact, he and Sweeney had to pull back on some of the chemistry and comfort they already shared.

“In The Wedding Veil, obviously, I’m very enamored with her,” Webster explains. “We had a lot of banter back and forth, and in the second one, she was my wife. We had this amazing connection, and it's hard to not play that connection with Ali, because this is our third movie together and we’ve known each other for decades.”

As longtime Days of Our Lives fans know, Webster and Sweeney crossed in Salem before ever coming together on Hallmark. While Sweeney still drops into Salem to play iconic Sami Brady from time to time, Webster played Nicholas Alamain from 1999-2000.

“We never had a scene together, directly, but from my recollection, we were in a couple of scenes together,” Webster says. “She would have scenes in the morning, I’d have scenes in the afternoon and then we attended a lot of events together, so we'd cross paths and chat.”

Decades later, he isn’t just reuniting with Sweeney on her movie series — he’s also delivering her words! One Bad Apple: A Hannah Swensen Mystery marks the Hallmark star and executive producer’s debut as a screenwriter.

“I was so happy for Ali when I heard she had the opportunity to write this and when she sent me the script, I literally stopped everything I was doing,” Webster says. “Right there, I sat down to read it. She should be proud! She wrote a fantastic first draft that turned into an even better movie by the time she was done polishing it.”

Victor Webster insists Hallmark isn’t just for women

Webster is thrilled to support Sweeney, both off and on-screen — which is a good thing for a Hallmark hunk! Flipping the script on many movies released today, Hallmark romances and mysteries are known for telling woman-centric stories that feature men in more supportive roles.

“I grew up in a household with a very strong, hardworking, business-minded mother, so I've been around strong female energy all my life and I appreciate that Hallmark showcases such incredible women,” says the 51-year-old Canadian actor. “There are so many incredibly beautiful, strong women in our world right now. Why not give positive examples of that to women who are growing up and let them know what they can become?”

He adds that despite Hallmark family’s reputation for being women’s networks showing women’s programming, he also meets plenty of male fans.

“I've done a lot of the Hallmark conventions, and the husbands begrudgingly say, ‘My wife got me into watching them. I fought it tooth and nail…and now I really like it,’” he shares with a chuckle. “These manly dudes are talking about how much they love these movies!”

Webster applauds the network for continuously upping its game when it comes to scripting and production values, but Hannah Swenson Mystery’s newest star believes the true magic of Hallmark is and always will be its family-friendly, feel-good energy.

“If you have a bad day, you sit down, you kick your feet up, you watch a Hallmark movie, and you feel 10 times better afterwards,” Webster tells Woman's World. “You got a positive outlook on life. You saw some beautiful relationships. You laughed. And you can do all that with the entire family.”

Having debuted on Hallmark in 2012 and appeared in well over a dozen movies since, Webster’s MatchMaker Mysteries series costar Danica McKellar moved to the Great American Family (GAC) network alongside Hannah Swensen Mystery and General Hospital star Cameron Mathison last year.
