George Miller’s ‘Furiosa’ to Premiere at 2024 Cannes Film Festival

“Furiosa,” George Miller’s prequel to his Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road,” will have its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as the titular warrior in the epic saga that spans 15 years and charts the title character’s origin story. A young Furiosa is kidnapped from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus, played by Chris Hemsworth. As they trek across the Wasteland, the gang come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war over dominance, Furiosa faces many trials to find her way home. Oh yeah, and she’s definitely out to kill those who murdered her family.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” will premiere at the festival (and out of competition) on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. “Fury Road” and Miller’s recent “Three Thousand Years of Longing” additionally debuted out of competition at the festival.

Miller directs the Warner Bros. film from a script he co-wrote with “Fury Road” scribe Nico Lathouris. The below-the-line team from “Fury Road” returns for “Furiosa,” including first assistant director PJ Voeten and second unit director and stunt coordinator Guy Norris, director of photography Simon Duggan, composer Tom Holkenborg, sound designer Robert Mackenzie, editor Eliot Knapman, visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson, and colorist Eric Whipp. The team also includes Miller’s other longtime collaborators: production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, costume designer Jenny Beavan, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, each of whom won an Oscar for their work on 2015’s “Fury Road.”

While the full Cannes lineup has yet to be announced, Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” is being eyed as a possible buzzy addition. Coppola teased in January 2024 that the sprawling, self-financed $120 million feature will have an early 2024 release; “Megalopolis” is expected to either debut at Cannes or Venice for a splashy festival circuit premiere.

“It’s only going to be a few months and it’ll be out,” Coppola said on the Accutron podcast, adding, “All I can say is I love the actors in it. It’s unusual, and it’s never boring. Other than that, wait and see.”
