George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the anticipated latest installment in his apocalyptic franchise, had its world premiere here at the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

The film received a standing ovation of 7 minutes and 50 seconds after the final frame played in Cannes’ massive Palais, which hosted the buzzy premiere and the cast that included Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays the titular character first essayed by Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road; Chris Hemsworth; and Tom Burke.

Baz Lurhmann, who was at Cannes two years ago with Elvis, was overheard as he exited the theater tonight calling the film “a steampunk, Wagnerian opera.”

Said Miller following the screening of the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow prequel to 2015’s Fury Road (which likewise world premiered in Cannes): “Thank you. We worked very hard on this film and it is very interesting to see what you make of it.”

In the origin story, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus (Hemsworth). But she then transfers over to Joe (Burke). In the end, her loyalties lie with no one as she forms a bond with a rogue, mysterious warrior in the middle of the Wasteland as they team to take a prized commodity, petroleum, into their own hands.

Taylor-Joy told Deadline earlier this week, “By nature, of how arduous the shooting schedule was, I was very often alone and (Furiosa’s) a character that’s very much in her head and she’s very, very quiet, so it felt everything around me that pushed that sense of isolation.” Upon reading the script, Taylor-Joy said she thought, “I’m going to have to experience these emotions and that’s the truth that will come out on the real screen.”

Miller previously told attendees at April’s CinemaCon in Las Vegas that he keeps making Mad Max movies “because they’re very addictive.”

Fury Road went on to win six Oscars and gross over $380 million worldwide. Furiosa starts its global rollout May 22 and hits domestic theaters May 24.
