Free film workshop set at Santa Fe Community College this summer

Apr. 25—One of the country's best film programs is bringing a free workshop to Santa Fe this summer, a move that excites local officials in a state that continues to see growth in the local film industry.

The graduate film program at New York University Tisch School of the Arts will host the workshop July 14 through Aug. 3 at Santa Fe Community College.

Jennifer LaBar-Tapia, director of the Santa Fe Film Office, said she and other local officials collaborated for almost a year to bring the workshop to the area, which is aimed at aspiring Native American filmmakers.

"It's a really big deal because Tisch is one of the top film schools in the world," she said. "And to have them here [in] Santa Fe is major."

The application deadline is April 30 and can be completed by emailing NYUSantaFeWorkshop@nyu.edu or online at bit.ly/NYUSantaFe.

Eligible residents include those of Pueblo or Indigenous descent; those who are 18 or older; those who are enrolled in college, recent graduates, or on a break from college; and those who are "passionate about telling Indigenous stories," according to a news release sent by the county. Previous film production experience isn't required.

According to the news release, participants will develop skills in Indigenous storytelling through a focus on directing, writing, hands-on filmmaking and technical instruction.

The final week of the program will see participants direct their own short films and collaborate on other participants' productions in various crew roles.

"Post-workshop support from NYU faculty and access to Santa Fe Community College's lab facilities will ensure the completion and screening of the films in the fall, reviewed by NYU faculty," the news release says.
