Emmy Experts predict Gary Oldman (‘Slow Horses’) will win Best Drama Actor

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Drama Actor at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are Dominic West (“The Crown”), Colin Farrell (“Sugar”), Tom Hiddleston (“Loki”), Donald Glover (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”) and Ben Mendelsohn (“The New Look”) — but that could all change in the coming months.

As of this writing, eight out of our nine Emmy Experts predict a victory for Oldman: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Thelma Adams (Gold Derby). He plays Jackson Lamb, the head of MI5’s division for rejects, on Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.” Oldman is a Best Actor Oscar champion for “Darkest Hour” (2017) and he has a single Emmy bid to his name for guest-starring on “Friends” (2001).

The remaining Emmyologist — Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) — instead believes West will prevail for Season 6 of “The Crown.” He hopes to follow in the footsteps of Josh O’Connor, who won a lead acting Emmy in 2021 for his portrayal of Prince Charles on Netflix’s regal drama. Despite an impressive career in television, including on shows like “The Wire” and “The Affair,” West has never received an Emmy nomination … but that should change this year.

Also looking strong in our Experts’ rankings is Farrell for Season 1 of “Sugar.” The Irish movie star takes on the role of main character John Sugar in this genre-bending Apple TV+ series about an L.A. private eye. Farrell recently earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination and won the comedy/musical Golden Globe for “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022), but he has yet to be recognized by the TV academy.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Drama Actor category include Kieran Culkin (“Succession”), Lee Jung-jae (“Squid Game”), Josh O’Connor (“The Crown”), Jeremy Strong (“Succession”) and Billy Porter (“Pose”).
