Emma Thompson Bashes Hollywood for Promoting Anorexia, Says It’s ‘Evil’

Recently on the Swedish talk show Skavlan, Emma Thompson was asked about Hollywood’s notorious reputation for asking actors and actresses to lose weight.

She has observed this plague of body image issues and said, “The anorexia … there’s so many kids, girls and boys, and actresses who are very, very thin, who are in to their 30s, [they] simply don’t eat. They don’t eat.”

Thompson mentioned an unnamed female co-star from her 2008 film Brideshead Revisited who was pressured to change her look. She recalled, “The producers said [to her], ‘Will you lose weight?’ She was absolutely exquisite. And I said to them, ‘If you speak to her about this again on any level, I will leave this picture.’”

Thompson said that Hollywood asking actors to lose weight is “evil” and “getting worse.”

It’s a serious subject, no doubt, but Thompson provided a moment of levity when she semi-jokingly said, “Every time I have to go to Los Angeles, I think, ‘Oh, God. I’m too fat to go there. They’re not going to let me in!’”
