It’s truly inspiring to see our screens becoming more inclusive by the day, with LGBTQ+ stories being told with depth and authenticity. It’s especially powerful when these narratives tackle the nuanced reality of coming out — imagine sharing your transition with a family of super-powered siblings! That’s exactly the path Elliot Page’s character took in Umbrella Academy, highlighting the importance of genuine representation in the process.
Speaking at the 2024 TIME100 Summit in New York City, Elliot Page opened up about his personal and professional journey of trans joy in a way that struck a chord with many. “[I felt] utterly elated and beyond grateful to be in a place where I could accept and love myself, doing what I needed and wanted to,” the actor, director, and LGBTQ+ activist shared, touching on the inner peace that comes with self-acceptance.

But it’s the off-screen support that really added to the storyline, particularly from Steve Blackman, the showrunner. Page opened up about how Blackman was one of the first people he opened up to about his transition. “I was so nervous calling him, but he was nothing short of incredible,” Page recalled, pointing out how Blackman didn’t just back the idea but was all in on bringing this authentic experience into the storyline, all while supporting Page in accessing the necessary care.

Yet, Page pointed out that there’s still a lot of ground to cover in Hollywood regarding trans representation. Despite this, he’s excited about the future and the possibility of exploring a wider array of roles post-transition. “Starting from the foundation of just being there is so thrilling,” Page said, sharing his enthusiasm for what lies ahead.
Much like how the Hargreeves siblings stick together through thick and thin in the hit Netflix series, Page’s own journey with Blackman and the rest of the Umbrella Academy crew showcases an incredible real-life bond of solidarity. It’s a powerful nudge to all of us that, with a little empathy and a whole lot of determination, we can keep pushing the envelope on inclusivity in Hollywood, making sure every story gets the authentic and respectful telling it deserves.
