Don Lemon says a 'political earthquake is rolling through Washington' after Mattis resignation

On Thursday’s CNN Tonight With Don Lemon, the anchor got very serious with his audience while reacting to the news that Defense Secretary James Mattis had resigned over policy differences with President Trump.

“If you are worried tonight, you should be. Because honestly, who knows what is going to happen next? I’m not being hyperbolic. I’m not being an alarmist,” Lemon said. “However you felt or feel about James Mattis, Secretary Mattis, Gen. James Mattis, he was the bulwark between impulse and stability in this administration. He was the last person left who could tell an impetuous president: Slow your roll. Hold your horses. Cool your jets. You don’t want to do that.”

Lemon went on to read the entire resignation letter from Mattis, and reminded people that President Trump is the commander in chief of the U.S. armed forces and that he has “no military experience.”

“What happened today has made it crystal clear that President Trump is acting against the advice of top Pentagon and national security officials because he thinks he knows better,” Lemon said.

Some viewers on Twitter reacted by calling Lemon’s words “fear-mongering,” and others were quick to point out that President Barack Obama removed Mattis, a four-star Marine general, as head of U.S. Central Command in 2013.

Other viewers agreed with Lemon’s remark and took advantage of the conversation to push one of Friday’s top-trending hashtags: #TrumpResign.

CNN Tonight airs weekdays at 10 p.m. on CNN.
