Deadpool #1 cover

The Merc with a Mouth is a fan of weird manga, which isn’t a big surprise if you think about it. The character is well known for breaking the fourth wall to reference other comic books and media from our world, so is it really that shocking to see him talk about Chainsaw Man in his latest comic? No, but it’s fun nonetheless.

In the newly launched Deadpool #1, released earlier this week, one panel sees Wade Wilson remark, “You ever seen Chainsaw Man?” to a goon before a giant Symbiote-infused dog gobbles him up. “Never mind, you’d probably hate it,” says Deadpool as the dog chomps on the bad guy.

It’s a direct reference to Chainsaw Man’s fight against the Leech Devil, where after a long battle, Denji is saved by the Fox Devil. Check it out below and spot its influence on the Deadpool comic.

Chainsaw Man is a manga and anime franchise created by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The manga started circulation in 2018, with an anime adaptation released in 2022. The series follows Denji, a teenager who has the ability to turn parts of his body into chainsaws after making a deal with a dog-like Devil.

Deadpool #1 also features other references to Fujimoto’s works. The latter is also a fan of Marvel, having designed alternate designs for Marvel characters like Captain America, as spotted by AnimeMojo.

Deadpool #1 is written by Cody Ziglar and illustrated by Roge Antonio, with cover art from Taurin Clarke. Here is the official description of the new series:

A NEW ERA FOR THE MERC WITH A MOUTH, AND A GUN, AND A SWORD... CODY ZIGLAR (Futurama, Miles Morales: Spider-Man) has a wild ride planned for the Merc with the mouth! Introducing a terrifying new villain who won't stop until he catches Wade in his DEATH GRIP. But all work and no play makes Deadpool a very dead boy!
