‘Damsel’ Battles to No. 1 on the Streaming Top 10
Competition is stiff in streaming. If a new film or series doesn’t catch audience attention in its first week, it becomes increasingly difficult for studios and publishers to market the title to stay in competition with the next week’s drop of new releases. Which makes it noteworthy to see the streaming chart in the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report filled with many of the same programs in last week’s list.
Netflix’s “Damsel” is in first place, up from No. 3 last week. The dark fantasy movie stars Millie Bobby Brown as the titular character, who, when she finds herself in distress, takes matters into her own hands.
At No. 2 is another climber, “The Gentlemen,” an action comedy series from Guy Ritchie, inspired by his film of the same name. It managed to move up from No. 5 last week to overtake “Shōgun,” the chart-topper for two consecutive weeks. This week, the FX/Hulu series about feudal Japan sits at No. 3, maintaining its impressive run with audiences.
Rounding out the quartet of holdovers is “Love is Blind,” which debuted with its explosive reunion episode, and continues to be a mainstay on the charts for Netflix. This week it sits at No. 4.
Meanwhile, the Lindsay Lohan-starring romcom “Irish Wish” rides some St. Patrick’s Day momentum into the No. 5 spot. Taylor Swift’s concert film, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” now streaming on Disney+, is at No. 6 this week. “Alone,” a 2020 thriller that was just added to the Netflix library, sits at No. 7.
The only Oscar-nominated title to make the list this week is “Poor Things,” which came in at No. 8. On the heels of star Emma Stone’s Academy Award for Best Actress, the film also saw the most viewership compared to other Best Picture nominees in the week following the awards ceremony, having recently come to streaming platforms.
Rounding out the Top 10 are two shows that hold their spots from last week: the comedy “Ricky Stanicky” on Amazon Prime Video at No. 9 and the WWII series “Masters of the Air” on Apple TV+ rounding out the list at No. 10.
On linear, viewers used their voice to buy a vowel, as “The Voice” and “Wheel of Fortune” accounted for a whopping 60% of the Top 10. “The Voice” regains its spot at the top of the chart after ceding the throne to the Oscars last week. A second episode of the singing competition is at No. 9.
The big week for “Wheel” puts it in the No. 5, No. 7, No. 8 and No. 10 spots. “American Idol” is second, and “The Bachelor” is No. 4. Only two scripted series crack the linear top 10 this week: “FBI,” at No. 3, and “The Equalizer,” at No. 6.
