As the voice of Lady Whistledown (Julie Andrews) declares at the top of the “Bridgerton” Season 3 trailer — it has been far too long.

After more than two years away, the steamy Netflix series based on Julia Quinn’s novels returns, this time to tell the story of Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan). Unlike previous seasons, both leads in this installment are already familiar to the hungry “Bridgerton” fanbase, as is the romantic trope of friends to lovers.

The trailer for Part 1 (four episodes) shows Penelope and Colin (apparently known as “Polin,” though this author may have to disagree on that one) rekindling their friendship after Colin returns from Europe so strikingly handsome that even his siblings notice; he offers to coach Penelope in how to charm suitors so that she may find a suitable husband, but the teaching process has Colin wondering about his own feelings. That’s all complicated by the arrival of Lord Debling (Sam Phillips), who is actively seeking a wife.

Along with the budding romance, the season also picks up with Penelope and Eloise (Claudia Jessie) still estranged after Eloise learned the true identity of Lady Whistledown. Not only does this make Pen more alone than ever while searching for a match, but her secret is vulnerable, and it may be time for her talk-of-the-ton persona to switch from writer to subject. The trailer offers glimpses of the rest of the Bridgerton siblings, including Season 2 suitor Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and wife Kate (Simone Ashley).

Though “Bridgerton” took a longer-than-expected hiatus between Seasons 2 and 3, 2023 marked the debut of the spinoff series “Queen Charlotte” helmed by Shonda Rhimes herself and drawing in millions of hours in viewership. Showrunner Jess Brownell takes over for Chris Van Dusen in the new season from Netflix and Shondaland, releasing over two parts in May and June.
