The girl is hers! Brandy Norwood has been a mom to daughter Sy'rai Smith since 2002.

"My favorite thing about motherhood is seeing myself in my daughter and seeing each other in each other," the R&B singer — who first stepped onto the music scene at age 15 with her self-titled debut album in 1994, followed by her critically acclaimed sophomore album, Never Say Never, which featured the Grammy-winning smash duet with Monica, "The Boy Is Mine" — told PEOPLE in 2020.

"Our personalities are the same. We share so much of the same likes and she loves music. I just love seeing her grow into her own artist," she added.

From looks to musical talent, Smith is often touted as mom Brandy's "twin," and the two share a very close bond.

So, who is Brandy's daughter? Here is everything you need to know about Sy'rai Smith and her relationship with the Moesha star.

She was born on June 16, 2002

Smith was born in June 2002 — on Father's Day — to Brandy and music producer Robert Smith, known as Big Bert. The former couple revealed the baby girl's name on Brandy's official website at the time.

As a new mother, Brandy felt an immediate connection to her baby girl. "It took me 13 months to let Sy'rai spend a night away from me," she told PEOPLE in July 2004.

In 2022, the musician celebrated Smith's 20th birthday by sharing a photo of her daughter on Instagram, calling her "my best friend and the greatest friend to all your friends."

"Smart — Wise beyond your years — naturally curious — know what you want even if I know better (smile) authentic, pure, and extremely grounded — you are an angel sent from the Most High (I can tell because of your heart and the tone of your angelic vocals) in the secret place of the Divine we dwell forever," Brandy wrote.

"Know and believe only the truth, and use thought only to be creative — write in your journal ♥️ welcome to the 20's! You got this! You were born a vessel and a light to everyone that you encounter — Contagious ♥️ #HappyBirthdayRai20," she added.

She's a musician like Brandy

With a superstar mom like Brandy, Smith was sure to inherit some musical prowess.

She first showed off her talents in the music department in 2020 when she posted a cover of the song "(At Your Best) You Are Love" by The Isley Brothers on her YouTube channel. (She also sang her mother's song, "Almost Doesn't Count," the following year.)

On a later release, Smith used a sample of her mom's voice, which Brandy herself was very proud of and shared her reaction to on Instagram. "This Special angel in disguise is mine. Listen @syraismith's beautiful angelic voice. I literally saw her Write, Record, and engineer this all by herself. Of course she made me leave here and there. But so happy she posted this snippet," the mom of one captioned a video of the song's audio clip.

The mother-daughter duo also collaborated on the song "High Heels" for Brandy's seventh studio album, B7, in 2020.

Smith later released her debut solo single, "On My Own," in May 2023, and her vocalist mother was overjoyed by her accomplishment.

"My baby Everywhere!!! @syraismith," Brandy captioned a post of the single's artwork on Instagram. "I love you and I'm so proud of you!!"

She's open about her body image

In November 2021, Smith opened up about body image during an interview on The Real, where she shared that she committed to losing weight due to several health issues.

Smith revealed that having Brandy as a mom sometimes made it difficult to see herself in a positive light, as she was always comparing herself to the performer.

"Seeing my mom dress a certain way or wear certain things, when she was on carpets or on set, it was kind of difficult because it was like, 'Why am I not that way? Why am I not that size? Why was I made the way I was made?' " she told The Real hosts Jeannie Mai and Adrienne Bailon. "Sometimes I would feel a little sad, or I would feel like she was embarrassed of me."

"These are all just insecurities in my head," Smith continued. "She was never like that. She always was supportive. She always knew that I was beautiful. She supported me whether I wanted to lose a lot of weight or not. She always told me that I was beautiful. Always."

She has five half-siblings

Smith's father is married to Xochitl Jacques-Smith — and the pair have five children.

Brandy had a relationship with the producer for nearly two years.

"You can't be so mad at somebody who gave you that kind of a gift," the producer told Vibe magazine in 2008. "At the end of the day, we have a beautiful child, and I'm the happiest man on Earth. That's really the logistics of it. No drama."

Smith shares a strong relationship with her family, and her father and stepmother often share photos of Smith with her siblings on social media.

For two years, Brandy starred on a reality show with her brother Ray J called Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business, which aired on VH1 from 2010 to 2011.

Life in front of the camera was familiar to the star herself, but that wasn't the case for her daughter, which was an intentional decision between Smith's co-parents.

"That's strictly because her father and I felt it was best for her to have as much of a normal life as possible," Brandy told Parade in June 2010.

"Of course, you've seen her on one episode of For the Love of Ray J, but it wasn't every day," she continued. "You didn't see her going to school, me combing her hair or any aspect of our private, intimate moments, which sort of sucks because our relationship is so beautiful."

In 2020, Brandy told PEOPLE that her daughter saved her life.

The musician dealt with severe bouts of depression and recalled feeling like her pain was so insurmountable that she even contemplated suicide.

"I remember laying in bed super depressed," she said. "I [told] myself, 'So, you're just going to go out like this? That's wack. You have a daughter. If you can't do it for yourself, do it for her because this is not the way to leave a mark in her life.' "

She credited her daughter with pulling her out of the darkness she felt. "If Sy'rai wasn't here, I wouldn't be either," Brandy said. "The place that I was in, it just felt like I wasn't going to make it through."

When Smith was a young girl, Brandy swore that the two would have a relationship that always prioritized friendship first.

"I know I'll probably get flack for being a friend first, but it really works," she shared about her parenting style to Parade in 2010. "At the end of the day, we're going to be friends. When she grows up, it'll be about that friendship that we'll have. She'll come to me for any problems that she has."

Later in 2020, Brandy told PEOPLE her relationship with her daughter is "the most important," adding: "I don't know what I would do without her."
