Philip Seymour Hoffman Is Talking About Revolution in the New 'Mockingjay' Trailer

After weeks of ominous, propaganda-themed teases, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1 finally premiered its new trailer with scenes from the movie. (The movie will premiere on Nov. 21 and the clip was shown to Comic-Con fans starting Friday.) When we last left our heroine Katniss in Catching Fire, she'd been rescued from the arena by a rebel conspiracy that included her competitor Finnick, her mentor Haymitch, and the Head Gamemaker Plutarch (played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman) who was secretly plotting against the Capitol. The hitch? Katniss’ home, District 12, was leveled in retaliation and both Peeta and Johanna were captured.

While Peeta’s plight is one of the dramatic focal points of the novel, it is Hoffman — in one of his final roles — who leads the first trailer along with new castmember Julianne Moore as District 13’s President Coin. The pair are in an intense discussion about whether or not the traumatized Katniss can seize the mantle of the Mockingjay, while we see scenes from a war that’s already in full swing, including glimpses of Liam Hemsworth as Gale and Natalie Dormer as Cressida. “Are you fighting Katniss? Are you here to fight with us?” asks a young rebel. For the first time we see Katniss’ face as she says, “I am. I will.”

When Hoffman died in February, the movie’s production was not yet finished but he had already completed most of his scenes. "There were a couple of scenes that were pretty substantial which we ended up giving to other actors to take over, and obviously, although no one is a replacement for Phil, the story still works," Mockingjay's director Francis Lawrence told Reuters in May.
