2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Movie/Limited Actress: Jodie Foster (‘True Detective: Night Country’) out front

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Actress at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority believe the trophy will go to Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”). The other potential nominees, per our racetrack odds, are Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Kate Winslet (“The Regime”), Anna Sawai (“Shogun”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”) and Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”).

As of this writing, a leading seven out of our 13 Emmy Experts predict a victory for Foster for “True Detective: Night Country”: Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Kelly Lawler (USA Today), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). She plays Chief Liz Danvers on Season 4 of HBO’s anthology crime series. Foster is a two-time Emmy nominee for producing the TV movie “The Baby Dance” (1999) and directing the comedy series “Orange is the New Black” (2014), but this would be her first acting bid from the TV academy. She is, of course, a double Best Actress Oscar winner for “The Accused” (1988) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991).

Two other Emmyologists — Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby) — instead believe Larson will prevail for “Lessons in Chemistry.” She portrays chemist Elizabeth Zott on the Apple TV+ limited series, for which she recently received bids at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and SAG Awards. Larson claimed a Best Actress Oscar for “Room” (2015), and she won an Emmy in 2020 in the category of Best Original Interactive Program for producing “The Messy Truth VR Experience.”

A pair of pundits — Peter Travers (ABC) and Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox) — forecast a triumph for Winslet for “The Regime.” She takes on the role of Chancellor Elena “Lenny” Vernham on HBO’s political satire. Winslet already has two Emmy Awards on her mantel in this exact same category for “Mildred Pierce” (2011) and “Mare of Easttown” (2021). Like Foster and Larson, she is a Best Actress Oscar champion for “The Reader” (2008).

Finally, our two remaining Experts — Ben Travers (Indiewire) and Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby) — think the Emmy will go to Sawai for “Shogun.” She plays Toda Mariko, an intelligent translator who has an allegiance to Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada). Sawai shared in the ensemble prize at last year’s Spirit Awards for “Pachinko,” but “Shogun” would be her first Emmy citation.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Movie/Limited Actress category include Ali Wong (“Beef”) in 2023, Amanda Seyfried (“The Dropout”) in 2022, Winslet (“Mare of Easttown”) in 2021, Regina King (“Watchmen”) in 2020 and Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”) in 2019.
