Who knew that the pope was this digitally aware? Maybe it shouldn’t come as such a surprise, considering that Pope Francis now has a papal Instagram account, called franciscus, that launched back in March, but apparently he is so in tune with the digital world that he has become a fan of beauty vlogs — not exactly a topic we would have guessed is his thing.

The news comes after Francis held a small meeting on Sunday with various YouTube stars and celebrities to encourage them to continue their work in helping young people establish their own virtual identities on the Internet, the Guardian reports.

“You can create a virtual identity; you belong to this circle at least virtually. From that you can start taking a path of optimism and hope,” the pope told the group, emphasizing the importance of creating an online community for like-minded individuals.

One of the YouTubers specifically addressed by the pope was British vlogger Louise Pentland of the Sprinkle of Glitter channel. Francis praised her, saying, “I am glad that you carry out the type of work you said; following the line of beauty, it’s a great thing. To preach beauty and show beauty helps neutralize aggression.”

Other attendees included Hayla Ghazal of Dubai and Dulce Candy of the U.S., as well as celebrities Salma Hayek, Richard Gere, George Clooney, and his wife, Amal Clooney.

Considering what a creative field YouTube vloggers are in and how much joy they bring to their fans, it’s wonderful to see such a public figure address them for the positive work they do. Also, kudos to the pope for trying to engage with the youth in a way that they can relate to.
