The Best (Free) Makeup Tool

While brushes are a foolproof way to apply makeup, never underestimate the power of your hands. The warmth of your hands can make blending easier, and the tips of your fingers can soften a shadow in a nanosecond.

  • If you use your pointer finger to apply cream shadows and shimmer, you will get a more intense sweep of color than with a brush. Place the color gently and layer more for a dense application. Use your ring finger to blend, but be careful not to pull on the delicate skin.

  • For a smoky eye and multiple layers, apply one shadow with your pointer finger and apply a second color with your ring finger. You can apply the color in the crease using your middle finger. You can easily fix any mistakes with a Q-tip or your pinkie.

  • Foundation brushes and sponges are great for applying both moisturizer and foundation, but your hands allow the products to be absorbed naturally and effortlessly.

  • When applying corrector and concealer you can start with a brush, but the heat from your hands will help the product melt into your skin better and look almost undetected.

  • You can apply cream blush with two fingers applying the color to the apples of your cheeks, blending out towards the hairline and softly down until there are no lines and the color looks natural.

  • Shimmer or highlighter is another product that’s ideal to apply with you fingers. Whereas shimmer can spread when placed the a brush, your fingers can guarantee a more precise and dense application.

  • Any lipstick can appear as a stain when applied with fingers. Blot color on the bottom lip and use your finger to make sure it’s in the corners.

  • Lastly when your makeup just doesn’t seem to look good, it’s probably because your skin is dry. Add a bit of face cream on your hands and apply all over to add hydration and soften your makeup.
