Press — Don’t Swipe — Mascara for Eye-Opening Lashes

You can stop swiping layer upon layer of mascara to the full lengths of your lashes, according to Gato, lead makeup artist for Naeem Khan’s Spring 2017 show at New York Fashion Week.

We were inspired backstage when the artist noted he was applying mascara only to the roots of the model’s lashes — part of a “movie-beautiful ’70s girl” who looks fresh and natural, à la Ali MacGraw in Love Story. It was the perfect understatement, along with nude primer on eyelids and naturally styled hair to go with Khan’s brightly colored statement gowns.

To achieve the look, use a wand with very tiny, sparse bristles, Gato explains, so “you can really go straight to the root, and just press, press, press,” which perfectly highlights the shape of the eyes.

Gato uses Maybelline’s new Push Up Angel ($9.49) as he awaits the January 2017 launch of the brand’s Colossal Big Shot Mascara. “With this kind of technique, it’s like wearing eyeliner — though with eyeliner you are losing the freshness because you are focused on the liner,” he says. “Here you are focused on the eyes.”

“Naeem wanted a neutral, very fresh makeup with the inspiration of the ’70s, and of course the type of nude is different in every decade,” he adds. Here’s a path toward that look, which you can now follow too.
