JCPenney and InStyle Bring Runway Hair to the Rest of America

As beauty editors in New York City, we learn about the latest hair trends straight from the source, since we’re lucky enough to have access to the top hairdressers in the country. Of course, that’s not the case for everyone, which is where JCPenney comes in. This year, the ubiquitously suburban department store is reinventing its 850 in-store salons and bringing in The Salon by InStyle, where you can get your Instagram-approved #MermaidHair color or a pixie cut while your mom shops for drapes. The retailer is no stranger to beauty collaborations; there are currently over 485 Sephora stores within JCPenney locations, so stepping up its salon game makes sense.

We tagged along while InStyle and JCPenney were shooting their salon lookbook, which features over 100 different looks that clients can pick and choose from. At the shoot, InStyle’s celebrity- and runway-oriented influence was clear (think Hilary Duff-inspired aquamarine mermaid hair color to big curls with beachy highlights), but the lookbook isn’t just about the trendiest hairstyles for the selfie-taking generation. JCPenney Salons artistic director Nick Stenson emphasized that more traditional and classic hairstyles for men and women are in the lookbook too. “When I was growing up, I’d accompany my mom to the salon at JCPenney and watch her get her hair cut and colored every other month,” adds InStyle beauty director Angelique Serrano. “I remember sitting in those chairs and I would be waving my feet on the chair looking through the trend book.”

Layered Curls: “Big, beautiful hairstyles are just as powerful today as they were in the 70s. Dusty rose highlights sprinkled throughout these natural-looking curls add a playful vibe.” (Photo: The Salon by InStyle)

While smaller independent salons might not catch onto to the latest hair techniques and trends, the launch of The Salon by InStyle aims to bring guaranteed runway- and celebrity-inspired hair to anyone in America. “The idea is that whether you are in New York, Los Angeles, or Iowa, you can get the same service at the same price,” Stenson says.
