Hilary Duff has got a brand new look. The actress stepped out with newly dyed green hair on Wednesday in Los Angeles, following in the footsteps of other Hollywood stars like Nicole Richie and Katy Perry who have played with vibrant hair colors in the past. The star’s mermaid locks are courtesy of Nine Zero One Salon master stylist Amber Maynard. Yahoo Beauty got the scoop on Duff’s new look straight from the source.

“The inspiration [for the hair color] came from her weekend trip to Cabo,” says Maynard. “She saw a photo of a model who had the hue, and decided she was up for the challenge.” The green hue is a pretty dramatic departure from Duff’s typically golden blonde locks, but she manages to pull it off—the beachy waves she rocks on a regular basis help to pull the whole “mermaid” look together.

For Maynard, getting the Crayola hue was a two-step process. First, she applied the color on Duff’s slightly grown out, previously highlighted hair. “We decided she needed more of a pop, and brought [the color] up to her scalp yesterday,” says Maynard. “It really changed the look and brought out her eyes.”

As far as the upkeep goes, Maynard likes to send her clients off with a little extra color that they can dilute at home and used to control how vibrant or pastel they want it. If you’re thinking of going for a rainbow hue, make sure you have a color-safe treatment on hand. Maynard recommends L’Oréal Paris Absolut Repair Lipidium Shampoo and Mask as well as the No. 3 Olaplex Bond Multiplier once a week. “I also recommend Blonda Shampoo from Unite,” says Maynard. “Even though it’s technically for blondes, it helps keep the pastel aspect of these fun colors!”
