EatPops: Delicious Popsicles That Are Truly Healthy

There’s no single food item that better epitomizes summer than a popsicle. Unfortunately, the frozen treats of our youth (think Flintstones push pops et al) are packed with pretty much every toxic ingredient we’ve learned to avoid, like artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors, and preservatives. This is where EatPops comes in.

Founded by bankruptcy lawyer-turned-food entrepreneur Sophie Milrom, EatPops turns your favorite healthy juices into refreshing popsicle form. Genius right? One of their most popular flavors, the Green Detox, is made from a blend of kale, spinach, apple, pineapple, lemon, ginger, and cayenne.

The idea came to Milrom when she was studying for the New York bar exam. “I really love to cook, but when you’re at your desk sixteen hours a day, you just don’t have time to make healthy meals,” she says. “So I went to the grocery store to stock up and realized that all the pre-made food was full of sugar, salt, preservatives, and chemicals.” She decided to buy fresh produce instead, taking it home to make her favorite juices and pouring them into popsicle molds. “Personally, I like eating more than drinking,” she says. “I can take down a green juice in 30 seconds, but with a popsicle, my snack lasts longer.”

Friends and family quickly became fans of Milrom’s sweet treats, too, and eventually convinced her to try selling them to the masses. So, with exactly zero experience in the food industry, she found a factory and started manufacturing samples — while still working her full-time day job. “I had always thought I wasn’t really eligible for entrepreneurship because I didn’t want to start a tech company,” says Milrom. “In the beginning I thought of this more as a passion project than as a business.”

All of that changed when grocery stores like Whole Foods started picking up her product. “There was such an opportunity here because everything else in the frozen section ranges from really-bad-for-you to less-bad-for-you,” she says. “People were settling for low calorie fudgsicle pops, which taste mediocre and aren’t healthy.” As she puts it, EatPops were really the first product you don’t just feel less bad about eating, but you actually feel good about.

Right now, all 8 flavors of EatPops are available at Whole Foods and other local retailers in the tri-state area as well as in California. You can also order them online for nationwide shipping. But, just in case you wanted to try your hand at a few healthy pops of your own, Milrom has provided some superfood-packed DIY recipes to try at home.
