Choosing the Right Powder

Just a small amount of powder can cut shine, even out skin, and make concealer and foundation last for hours. The key is finding the right color and texture. The wrong powder can make you look pasty, ashy, or heavily made up. Here’s how to find the perfect formula:

• There is a myth that translucent powder is invisible. It’s not, and can actually look ashy or white, on skin and not natural. Always avoid it.

• For most people powder with a yellow-undertone works to help cut redness and give a warmth to the skin. Choose a shade that matches the color of your skin almost exactly.

• If you have very oily skin, powder can turn a darker shade on your skin. In this case I recommend going a shade lighter.

• If you have very dry skin, you may not need powder at all, as it can make your skin look even more dry and flaky.

• Too much moisturizer on skin can make powder look cakey, so apply it sparingly and let it dry before applying.

• Pressed powder is a great on-the-go option to have on hand. The finish is lighter and more natural.

• Loose powder is denser and offers more coverage.

• Different formulas provide different finishes. Matte powders leave a flat finish, while sheer versions offer just that.  Mineral powders act as powder and foundation in one.

• You don’t need to apply powder all over your face. Just a light dusting where you have shine, which for most women is in the T-zone, is enough.
