Protest over Kamaruzzaman death sentence paralyses Bangladesh

A Bangladesh war crimes tribunal which convicted and sentenced Jamaat-e-Islami party leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman to death have angered hardline Islamists as they went on a rampage destroying property, clashing with the police and targeting religious minorities. Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, assistant secretary general of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, was found guilty of genocide and torture of unarmed civilians during the 1971 war for independence from Pakistan, lawyers and tribunal officials said. The Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has consistently maintained that it will not bow down to the pressure of the hardliners.
