BJP- JD (U) split: Friends turn foe

Ani
The Janata Dal (United) announced on Sunday that it has ended the 17-year-old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after the BJP promoted firebrand leader Narendra Modi to lead its election campaign. Addressing a press conference in Patna, JD (U) president Sharad Yadav said that their relationship with BJP saw many ups and downs in the last 17 years as they tried to work together under NDA's national agenda. However the developments in the last six months had made things difficult for them to work together with the BJP. In response to a question that Nitish had praised Modi for development after Gujarat riots, Sharad said that it is past now. However, Nitish Kumar who was the railway minister in the NDA government had in 2003 praised Modi for bringing about development in Gujarat.
