Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and Toyota today announced that their upcoming, jointly developed moon rover will be nicknamed the Lunar Cruiser, borrowing inspiration from Toyota's flagship go-anywhere Land Cruiser.

Well, when I say anywhere, I mean anywhere on terrestrial land. The moon requires a completely different car, one with a pressurized cabin and a fuel-cell electric powertrain. That's what JAXA and Toyota are working on, tapping the automaker's off-road know-how and fuel cell technology to develop the Lunar Cruiser. Mitsubishi is also assisting with the project.
