Hyundai Vision G Coupe Concept Revealed As Your Chivalrous Cruiser

Of all the success it's enjoyed in America, Hyundai's ambitions as a luxury carmaker have been far greater than the results so far. The Genesis sedan is compent but slow-selling, and the $62,000 Hyundai Equus a footnote in the German-Japanese-American luxury wars. And one of the weakness in Hyundai's plan so far was a lack of strong design in its most-expensive products.

This car might change that. The Vision G Concept unveiled tonight in Los Angeles shows off not just what a proper Genesis/Equus coupe might look like, but the cues that Hyundai will use in its next generation of luxury haulers of all sizes. Powered by the 420-hp, 5-liter V-8 from the Equus, Hyundai chief designer Peter Schreyer says " balances design and performance with the idea that you don’t need to be over the top in terms of glitz and stereotypical luxury cues." Hyundai even goes so far as to say the designers focused on "chivalry" as a theme — the opposite, one supposes, of all those luxury cars for dudebros.

Armchair car designers will notice a lot of Aston Martin influence, from the shield front grille to the rear pillars; I'd even note that the features look designed to fit as easily on a taller SUV body as they do to a coupe or sedan. Chivalrous or not, Hyundai knows how to show off its ambition.
