'Y'all be drunk in South Korea': TikToker has hilarious reaction to trying soju for the first time

Soju is now trending on Twitter after a hilarious video of a TikTok user trying the popular Korean liquor for the first time went viral.

Twitter users started sharing their stories about soju after TikTok user CrownMeCutie filmed a reaction video with the distilled alcoholic beverage. The TikTok user’s video has amassed more than 14.5 million views since being uploaded on Sunday.

In the clip, the TikToker shows herself reaching for a 375-milliliter (approximately 12.68-ounce) bottle of Joa soju with 16% ABV (alcohol by volume) for just $3.99 at an Asian grocery store. Her video’s on-screen text issues a warning to “Put it back” the moment she says, “Let me try real quick.”

After returning home, she compares the soju bottle side-by-side with a regular bottle of water. Without hesitation, the TikTok user twists the cap off and proceeds to chug the drink straight from the bottle.

That’s liquor,” she proclaims repeatedly. “That’s straight liquor.”

The popular Korean beverage is traditionally made from ingredients such as rice, wheat or barley. It also comes in different fruity flavors such as apple, plum, lychee and peach, and its ABV (alcohol by volume) is typically around 20%. To put this into context, a bottle of soju is stronger than 12 ounces of regular beer, which typically has an ABV range of around 5%, and 5 ounces of table wine, which typically has an ABV range of around 12%.

Soju, which is typically consumed in shots and not straight from the bottle, can pack a mean punch and knock moderate drinkers out of their senses, as shown by some Twitter users.

My 1st duty station was in South Korea and my 1st week I was out in them clubs in Seoul and got a bottle of Soju and it was a wrap after that 3rd sip,” a Twitter user wrote. “Woke up with my hand around the door handle to my room! Learned my lesson!”

All my military folks that been stationed in the Pacific already know what’s up. Soju has set back many careers in one single night,” one user declared.

Girl I had this for New Years couple years back sh*t ain’t no joke had me f*cked up n the best way,” another user wrote.

After filming her viral reaction, CrownMeCutie posted an update showing her bottle of Joa soju and admitting that she could only drink half of it.
