Brandi Carlile kicks off 'historic' 'Austin City Limits' season that spotlights women

The longest-running music television show in history returns to the airwaves at 8 p.m. on Oct. 1 on PBS stations, as "Austin City Limits" kicks off its 48th season with an episode featuring the third appearance of Americana star Brandi Carlile.

"I love this show because it's a show," Carlile told the audience at her "Austin City Limits" taping in July. Unlike most television shows that allot five minutes for musical performances, the full sets artists perform for "Austin City Limits" provide "room for emotion and expression," Carlile explained.

Carlile's vibrant performance demonstrated her "versatile ability to shift from hushed ballads to midtempo folk-rock numbers to full-on raging rockers," the Statesman's Peter Blackstock wrote about the set.

On Oct. 15, the station will air an episode with Sylvan Esso and Lucius (who return to Austin for a live performance in November). "Austin City Limits" executive producer Terry Lickona called this year's lineup "historic."

“Never before have we showcased such an amazing mix of diverse and eclectic female artists, each making their mark on contemporary music with their own unique talents," he said in a statement.

The season will also feature sets from Texas legends Lyle Lovett and Robert Earl Keen, who taped an emotional episode in April after announcing that he will retire from touring this year.
