What to Binge This Weekend: Fall in Love With the New Gina Rodriguez Web Series 'I Love Lucy & Bekka'

If you’ve been missing Jane the Virgin during its temporary hiatus (new episodes start again on March 9), the just-launched web series I Love Lucy & Bekka gives you some much-needed face time with the show’s Golden Globe-winning star, Gina Rodriguez. And don’t worry about having to cram in a 13-hour binge session before Jane’s return; you can watch the entirety of Lucy & Bekka in less time than it takes to watch one episode of the acclaimed CW primetime soap.

Clocking in at a mere two-minutes each, the 12 installments center around best gal pals Lucy (The Bold and the Beautiful star Kristolyn Lloyd) and Bekka (Rodriguez) and their random, directionless, and wholly hysterical conversations involving, among other things, Internet porn and why jails should exist (except for child molesters). Clearly influenced by the classic Daniel Clowes graphic novel Ghost World and its equally terrific 2001 film adaptation, directed by Terry Zwigoff and starring Scarlett Johansson and Thora Birch, Lucy & Bekka creator/writer Rachael Holder has lots of fun depicting the characters’ co-dependent friendship, which is equal parts admirable and totally unhealthy. Rodriguez — who shows off a completely different comic rhythm here than she brings to the fizzy, dizzy Jane — and Lloyd have great chemistry as well. Here’s hoping they reunite to shoot 12 more when Jane takes its summer break.
