Emmy Nominees Reveal Their Second-Choice Careers

“Celebrity” is a job that many people aspire to. But what jobs would actual celebrities be doing if there weren’t in the business of show? We asked this year’s Emmy nominees what career paths they might have pursued had they not gotten their big break. For example, black-ish star — and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy nominee — Anthony Anderson contemplated being a lawyer. Why? “Because I believe they’re some of the biggest actors out there.” Meanwhile, Emmy-nominated House of Cards guest star Rachel Brosnahan would have opted for the teaching route…though only as a back-up option if “pop star” didn’t work out.

Some of the stars we spoke with did have other jobs before performing became their full-time gig. Getting On’s Niecy Nash was a hairstylist and make-up artist, American Crime’s Richard Cabral was working in a bakery before he was discovered by Southland casting agents, and Dancing with the StarsWitney Carson has her certificate to be a dental assistant. But it sounds like Better Call Saul’s Jonathan Banks deserves the award for Outstanding Alternate Career: “I could sit by the side of the road and count the ducks as they go by, and I’d be quite content.” Excuse us while we pull up a chair next to you, Mr. Banks.
